Winter Olympic Sports Breakdown: Luge 101!

This Winter Olympic Sports Breakdown series will take a look at everything you need to know about some of the sports this winter including how they are scored, accounts you should follow for each sport, and who is expected to win! In this article, we will be talking about the Olympic sport, luge.

What It Is

Luge, bobsledding and skeleton are the three sliding sports at the winter Olympics. Luge can be competed as an individual event or as a partner event at the Olympics. The athlete sits on the sled and propels themselves to begin the ice track. Then, they lie down on the sled and go through the ice track to compete for the fastest time, using their calf muscles and their shoulder blades to steer the sled with pressure. Here is an example of a luge run:

How It’s Scored

Similar to bobsledding, luge is scored based on time. Individuals or partners compete in 4 runs to try and get their best time. Whoever has the fastest time wins.

Who Will Win?

Germany and Austria have strong contenders for gold in the men’s division. For the women’s division, Germany has many athletes who could take gold.
