Winter Olympic Sports Breakdown: Bobsledding 101!

The 2022 Winter Olympics debut this Friday! This Winter Olympic Sports Breakdown series will take a look at everything you need to know about some of the sports this winter including how they are scored, accounts you should follow for each sport, and who is expected to win! For our next sport, we have Bobsledding!

What It Is

Bobsledding began in Switzerland and is now a widely known Olympic sport. Bobsledding may sound confusing but it is actually pretty simple. There are two-man and four-man bobsled teams. Each of these are separate events but the rules and scoring are the same. Teams run alongside a sled towards a downward hill and then jump inside of the sled just before the hill begins. The sled with the bobsledders inside of it then follows along an ice track and the team with the best time wins. One of the teammates drives the sled using two ropes. These ropes steer the front of the bobsled to either the right or the left to follow along the track.

How It’s Scored

Bobsledding isn’t necessarily scored. Teams compete in 4 “heats” which are basically just 4 turns to try and get the best time on the track. Whoever has the fastest time wins.

Who Will Win?

Germany is the current favorite to win gold in bobsledding this winter for the men. The United States is making a strong case as potential gold medalists for the women.
