It’s been over 40 years later since Grease first premiered and we still cannot get enough! Here is who we would cast if we were doing a 2022 remake!
“I’ve got chills. They’re multiplying!”
Grease is a generational movie, and it still remains to be one of the most classic films of all time. A few years ago, on June 16, 1978, Grease turned 40, and we are still obssessed. In honor of our love for this iconic movie, here is a 2022 pick for a potential Grease recasting.
Sandy: Taylor Momsen
Sandy is known to have a sweet, innocent personality, but do not be fooled. She also has a confident, feisty side to her that nobody saw coming. Taylor Momsen undeniably shows both of those sides in the hit show Gossip Girl. Additionally, Momsen is a part of a music group called The Pretty Reckless. With her acting and singing abilities, she could definitely transform into the newly accepted Pink Lady.
Danny: Austin Butler
Danny is the respected high school “cool boy” who has an innate sense of style and perfect hair. He is tough but has a lot of charm, especially his smile, making him a sensational heartthrob. Austin Butler’s transformation into Elvis Presley goes without saying he would be the best match for Danny. Between the slicked-back hair, rockin’ outfits and pitched singing voice, he defines the popular 50s look.
Rizzo: Alexa Demie
Rizzo is the brutally honest friend who doesn’t care what anyone thinks, except when there’s a rumor she has a bun in the oven. She has a bold and sassy personality who goes after what she wants. Alexa Demie’s role as Maddie in Euphoria definitely could fill a modern-day Rizzo’s shoes. They both have a tough and fearless quality about them, proven to be born leaders.
Marty: Amandla Stenberg
Marty is sophisticated, even wearing glasses to appear “smarter.” She is very flirtatious and has a thing for older guys like Vince Fontaine. While Amandla Sternberg plays more serious roles, she has a musical background and charming personality. Her eyes tell it all. Not only does she sing, but she wrote a song for her character in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. Portraying Marty in Grease could have Stenberg continuing on the musical movie route.
Frenchy: Anya Taylor-Joy
Everyone’s favorite beauty school dropout has a caring, fun-loving personality. She is one of the most friendly members of the Pink Ladies and makes it a priority to include Sandy, although she is the “new girl.” Anya Taylor-Joy’s role in Last Night in Soho as an ambitious, doe-eyed woman makes her a great fit for Frenchy.
Jan: Chiara Aurelia
Jan is known to be the smart one of the bunch with a spunky, goofy personality. She is young at heart and doesn’t care who knows it! Chiara Aurelua’s role as Jeanette Turner in Cruel Summer can prove that she can change into ample characters, even just on one show. Her dorky nature fits Jan to a T.
Kenickie: Glen Powell
Kenickie is the “bad boy” but does have a kind, loving side to him. Similar to Danny, he has a charming smile, making him the ultimate babe magnet. Glen Powell is multifaceted in the world of cinema. He can be cocky like in Top Gun: Maverick, or he can be romantic like in Set it Up, which aligns him with Kenickie.
Sonny: Timothee Chalamet
Sonny doesn’t take crap from anyone and likes to joke around, especially with Principal McGee. He can be brash at times but also loyal to his buddies. Timothee Chalamet has a cool boy persona that tends to stir the pot. Normally known for his dramatic roles, Chalamet’s appearance in Don’t Look Up or his wacky Saturday Night Live sketch alongside Pete Davidson line up to that of Sonny.
Doody: Bowen Yang
Doody is the funny, goofy one of the bunch. He doesn’t care if he wounds up in some mischief. He carries a toy yellow squirt gun around, showing off his playful side. Bowen Yang is known for his hilarious sketches on Saturday Night Live, having the charisma to change into character. Yang would certainly put his own spin on Doody and bring him to life.
Putzie: Mena Massoud
Putzie is the kindest member of the T-Birds who takes on an innocent nature. Mena Massoud’s role in Aladdin could ultimately align with Putzie. At the end of the day, Aladdin is quick-witted and caring. Massoud has a “good boy” persona about him which is a great fit for Putzie, who is a gentleman to Jan.
Coach Calhoun: Bill Murray
Not only is Bill Murray a huge sports fan, but he is a part-owner of a Minor League baseball team. Therefore, he can embody the infamous Coach Calhoun. Calhoun tries effortlessly to help Danny pass gym class, put his smokes down and pick up a ball. Needless to say, it is very trying. Nevertheless, if there’s one thing Murray can do for sure, it’s make people laugh. Calhoun has some humorous one-liners that the comedian could eat up.
Principal McGee and Blanche: Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig
Principal McGee and her, at times, incompetent assistant, Blanche are in charge of all the many personalities at Rydell High. Their job is definitely underrated and full of chaos. Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig could recreate the comic relief you need at any job especially being in charge of unruly teens. These two peas in a pod are no stranger to providing wacky innuendos that will make everyone crack up!
