Whitney Way Thore is an American television personality best known for her appearances on the television show My Big Fat Fabulous Life, which the TLC network transmits. As a fat acceptance movement activist, Thore has also achieved national recognition for her online campaign for positive body image, “No ((Body Shame)).” Thore has been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, causing weight loss to be particularly challenging.

Whitney Way Thore was born on April 14, 1984 in Greensboro, North Carolina United States to Glenn and Barbara Thore. She has an older brother, Hunter, who resides in New York City.

Thore was accepted into the theatre summer enrichment program at the Governor’s School of North Carolina at Meredith College in 2000. After graduating from high school, Thore enrolled at Appalachian State University inBoone, North Carolina majoring in theatre.

After she graduated from college, Thore relocated to South Korea to teach English to schoolchildren. When Thore returned to the U.S., she became the on-air producer of Jared & Katie in the Morning on 107.5 KZL, a major radio station on Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

On February 27, 2014, Thore created a dance video called “A Fat Girl Dancing” on her YouTube channel. Soon, the video went viral, allowing Thore to push her message of body acceptance and positive body image, and as a direct result, Thore was featured on numerous media outlets such as ABC News, NBC News‘s Today Show, and The Huffington Post, as well as Animal Planet.

In early January of 2015, TLC aired My Big Fat Fabulous Life, which followed the chronicles of Thore’s life, and her mission to lose weight. The first season aired with ten episodes, and TLC was expected to air the second season during the summer of 2015.
