This year has been a tough one for many, and the theater community is no exception. With Covid, shows won’t be able to resume any time soon. Currently, they plan to come back in June of 2021, but with cases on the rise, it may be longer than that. This has left many actors, singers, dancers, and behind the scenes workers without a job in a city that is extremely expensive to live in.
In an effort to help the community and showcase some of the talent, Tina Fey will be hosting a two-hour Broadway television special on NBC this December.
“I’m so happy to be a part of this night, raising money for Broadway Cares, and to watch these mega-talented people do what they do best,” Fey said.
The show will be called “One Night Only: The Best of Broadway” and will feature performances by the cast of several Broadway shows, including “Ain’t Too Proud,” “Chicago,” “Jagged Little Pill,” “Mean Girls” and “Diana,” as well as an appearance by the cast of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” The event will also feature Broadway shows scheduled to open in 2021 as well as performances from ”Jersey Boys” and “Rent.”
The special is intended as a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. NBCUniversal will be making its own donation to the cause.
“With Broadway being crippled by current events, it’s never been more vital to showcase these incredible performers and remind audiences of their extraordinary talents for when they return to the stage,” Doug Vaughan, executive vice president of special programs said to NBC Entertainment. “We’re proud to partner with Broadway Cares and do our part to help those in that tight-knit community during these difficult times.”
There will also be performances by a number of artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Brett Eldredge, and Patti LaBelle, and include appearances from Annaleigh Ashford, Lance Bass, Kristen Bell, Ron Cephas Jones, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Peter Gallagher, Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sean Hayes, Nathan Lane, Camryn Manheim, Alanis Morissette, Jerry O’Connell, Leslie Odom Jr., Billy Porter, John Stamos, Aaron Tveit, Blair Underwood, Vanessa Williams, and Susan Kelechi Watson.
The 2-hour event will air on December 10th at 8 pm on NBC.
