Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke are joining Secret Invasion? What we know about the newest MCU Disney + show!
Now that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is wrapping up its six-episode run fans and Marvel enthusiasts alike are looking to the future. While Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are coming to both theaters and Disney +, some might be wondering about the television side of things. After Loki premieres on June 11th, many are wondering what’s next. Luckily, Marvel isn’t keeping fans in the dark for long as far as upcoming projects. The studio is hard at work producing their next crop of shows taking place in the vast Marvel universe. One of those shows is Secret Invasion starring Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson.
In Captain Marvel, we were introduced to The Skrull, a race of extraterrestrial shapeshifters and one of their members Talos played by Ben Mendelsohn. Through Talos, Nick Fury and Carol Danvers are able to create an alliance with The Skrull. Secret Invasion takes place after these events and follows a sect of Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth. This idea comes from a very beloved Marvel Comics crossover storyline that ran through a self-titled eight-issue limited series and several tie-in books. In the comics, this led to the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D., yet that has already happened in the MCU. Characters like Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Professor Charles Xavier, and Doctor Strange who appear in the Secret Invasion comic storyline are unlikely to reprise their roles for the live-action adaptation. After all, characters such as Professor Charles Xavier and Mister Fantastic haven’t even made their debut in the MCU yet while figures like Iron Man have already made their exit.
To make up for the lack of superhero presence, Secret Invasion is stacking up its cast with talent. One Night in Miami breakout star Kingsley Ben-Adir was recently added to the series in a mysterious villainous role. Academy-Award winner Olivia Colman is also being pursued a top-secret role. If Colman joins the cast it will be her first starring television role since her tenure as Queen Elizabeth II on seasons three and four of Netflix’s The Crown. Four-time Emmy nominee Emilia Clarke is reported to be joining the cast as well. Like Olivia Colman, this will be a big return to the small screen for Clarke who previously starred on eight seasons of the HBO hit Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen. Since then, Clarke has participated in several other popular franchises with her roles in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Terminator Genisys. We can only expect more talented folks to be added to the cast as filming approaches in the Fall.
As for behind the camera, Secret Invasion will be written and run by Kyle Bradstreet. Fans of the hit USA Network show Mr. Robot might be familiar with the name as Bradstreet worked on the series as a writer since the first season. While the series continues to look for directors you can watch Mr. Robot on Amazon Prime to get an idea of what’s to come for Secret Invasion.
