It’s beautiful to see Summer Walker’s growth from her debut album Over It, to her most recent release, Still Over It. Let’s take a look at the music then and now to see how she has evolved, and even make some predictions on where she’ll take the deluxe album!
Since the release of her freshman album Over It in 2019, Summer Walker has grown so much as an artist. In the span of just a couple of years, she has become a platinum award-winning artist, revitalized the R&B genre, and became a mother. In her most recent project Still Over It, Walker continues to share her notably honest and raw lyrics, exploring love and her transition into motherhood. While the subject matter has grown along with her, the potency of her lyrics remains the same.
“Bitter” with Narration by Cardi B
We really enjoyed Summer’s use of interludes this time around. While she is already a beautiful storyteller, the interludes added another layer to the project. They give listeners a peek behind the curtain, allowing us to better understand the inspiration for the music, or the message that an artist is trying to convey. Still Over It begins with “Bitter,” a song chronicling her experiences with her boyfriend’s exes. The song ends with what sounds like a voicemail from rapper Cardi B, telling her to not let the drama get the best of her, to tell her story through her music. A prelude to the journey she is about to take us on.
“Insane”
What would a Summer Walker album be without paying homage to the artists before her? From her choice in collaborations to her ear for production, it can be heard throughout her discography. Summer plans to release a deluxe version of the album, and we can just imagine how Jazmine Sullivan would sound on her track “Insane,” produced by Slimwav, Roark Bailey, Remey Williams, and London On Da Track.
“You Don’t Know Me”
One of the main differences between Over It and Still Over It is that this album feels like a story unfolding. We begin the project with Walker defending her then boyfriend London Holmes, and it ends with a beautiful prayer from Ciara, asking God for a better man. She really takes the listener on this journey with her. The heartbreak and conflicting feelings, the lack of communication, the yearning to stay despite the hurt. This all shines through in one of the project’s most vulnerable songs, “You Don’t Know Me.”
“No Love” ft. SZA
This album is similar to her freshman project in the sense that it has amazing features from other artists. This time around Walker hosted more female artists on her album, including a long awaited collaboration between herself and SZA on “No Love.” Listeners also got some amazing collabs with Ari Lennox, JT of the City Girls, Lil Durk, and Omarion. We can’t help but hear Kehlani as a possible feature for this song on the deluxe.
“Dat Right There” with Pharell Williams & The Neptunes
Collaborating with iconic artists such as Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes is a major feat and milestone in Walker’s career. This alone is an indication of her growth, despite her entrance to the game including features from the likes of Drake and Usher. The song is one of the project’s more upbeat tunes, both in production and lyricism.
With Still Over It occupying the Apple charts’ top 20, and its’ projected #1 spot on Billboard, we’re excited to see how people will continue to receive all that Summer’s album has to offer.
