Wow! Succession just delivered one of the most shocking TV episodes of all time, and Social Media had a lot to say!
***MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SUCCESSION***
After two stellar episodes, it was clear that Succession Season 4 was something special. The Emmy-winning show has always been a high watermark for modern TV, but in its final season, it has been delivering some of the best television ever. This is especially true of last Sunday’s episode, “Connor’s Wedding,” which was shocking, heartbreaking, and yet still somehow funny.
For the first 15 minutes or so, the episode played like an average episode of Succession. Connor is getting married, Logan is making Roman fire Gerri, and Tom and Logan are on a flight to Sweden to meet with Mattson. These are all compelling storylines that could make for an excellent hour of Succession. However, 15 minutes into the episode, there was a shocking reveal, Logan Roy is dying on the plane, and he’s not going to make it. What followed was a masterclass in writing and acting as we saw every character trying to grapple with such a seismic shift.
Fans of the show fell head over heels for this episode, calling it one of the show’s very best.
I…I think we all…just witnessed…one of the greatest episodes of television ever. Phenomenal acting from everyone across the board. The chaos, sadness, confusion & sense of urgency was so authentic, raw & devastating. Wow. Stunned. Bravo #SuccessionHBO #Emmys #FYC pic.twitter.com/rcqSVzukg1

With one *possible* exception, #Succession did the thing that it did tonight with more honesty/accuracy/humor than any other single episode of TV that I’ve ever seen. I don’t usually play the, “All the Emmys!” game. But… All the Emmys. #SuccessionHBO

From a perspective of craft, this season of SUCCESSION has been otherworldly, but I am certain that Mark Mylod cinched his Emmy tonight.

As of now, “Connor’s Wedding” holds a 9.9 rating on IMDb, the highest in the show’s history, topping the 9.8 received by the season finales of both Seasons 2 and 3. It’s clear that this episode had a huge effect on people.
Every actor has had tons of praise for this episode, but Sarah Snook seems to be the stand-out as “Sarah Snook Emmy” has been trending since the episode aired.

Fans were also quick to point out the little details about the episode that make it all the more heartbreaking.
The tragedy of SUCCESSION, one of its many, is that Logan Roy raised his children — and led his employees — not to be empowered, nor to succeed him in business, but to take a bullet for him and to be fully incapable of contemplating a world without him.

many things to praise this episode for but i really admired how adamantly they refused to take a “let that sink in” beat for the entire hour. no moment of still and quiet where your heart drops into your stomach. just nervy, buzzy chatter. totally arresting. bravo https://t.co/JHpYljjY7I

It’s fucked up how perfectly they translated the comedy of the show, the absurdity of violent wealth distorting relationships, to the surrealism of grief. When the boat takes off –

SUCCESSION SPOILERS!! but the really sad thing about shiv feeling like she missed it, that she just got put on next to his ear out of pity, is that tom called her twice and she silenced it. she was the first person he called. she would have been the first to know.

After the episode aired, it was also noticed that Logan’s fate was actually teased in this season’s poster, as the plane that Logan dies in can be seen in the reflection of the building.

While Logan’s death felt inevitable, it was shocking how early in the season it came and how emotional the episode managed to be over the death of a character who was sometimes downright despicable.
With 7 episodes left in the series, we are no doubt in for a wild ride as the kids try to pick up the pieces after their father’s death.
Succession airs Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
