The long-awaited western Rust, starring Alec Baldwin, debuts May 2 with a new trailer previewing the outlaw drama marked by controversy and tragedy.
Alec Baldwin’s Rust is finally headed to theaters—and with it comes a wave of intrigue, tension, and unresolved emotion. A new trailer has dropped for the controversial Western, giving audiences their first full look at Alec Baldwin’s performance as a notorious outlaw in a high-stakes tale of redemption and survival. Rust is set to premiere on May 2, 2025, with Falling Forward Films and Ascending Media Group overseeing its theatrical and VOD distribution, respectively.
Set in 1880s Wyoming, Rust follows the story of Lucas Hollister, a recently orphaned teen who accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. Just as his fate seems sealed, his estranged grandfather, Harland Rust—played by Alec Baldwin—intervenes. Rust, a feared outlaw, breaks Lucas out of jail and the two go on the run toward Mexico. As they trek across brutal terrain, they must evade the relentless U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and a merciless bounty hunter known only as Preacher.
The new trailer teases the rugged, emotional journey between grandfather and grandson, as Alec Baldwin’s Harland Rust faces not only the dangers of the law but also the ghosts of his past. The action-packed footage features sweeping frontier landscapes, tense shootouts, and glimpses of the complicated bond at the heart of the story.
Rust boasts a packed supporting cast including Frances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, Travis Fimmel, Patrick Scott McDermott, Devon Werkheiser, Rhys Coiro, Xander Berkeley, Jake Busey, Abraham Benrubi, Travis Hammer, Nick Farnell, Sam Carson, Richard Gunn, and Easton Malcolm.
The film is written and directed by Joel Souza, based on a story he developed with Alec Baldwin. However, the road to Rust’s release has been overshadowed by the tragic 2021 on-set shooting that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after a live round was discharged from Alec Baldwin’s prop firearm. The incident made headlines around the world and led to criminal charges against both Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
Though Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter, the case was dismissed in July 2023 after the prosecution failed to provide key evidence. Gutierrez-Reed, however, was convicted and is currently serving an 18-month sentence.
Despite the controversy, Rust moved forward under a unique condition: its producers will not profit from the film. Instead, all proceeds will go to Halyna Hutchins’ husband, Matt, and their son, Andros, as part of a legal settlement.
The film is produced by Alec Baldwin, Matt DelPiano, Grant Hill, Anjul Nigam, Ryan Donnell Smith, Melina Spadone, Ryan Winterstern, and Nathan Klingher. Executive producers include Matthew Hutchins, Stephen Marinaccio, Allen Cheney, Rachel Robinson-Zetzer, Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, Stephen Hays, Peter Graham, Carter Boehm, and Richard Gray.
With its powerful story, complex real-world history, and Alec Baldwin’s high-profile return to film, Rust is sure to spark conversation when it arrives on May 2.
