Acclaimed filmmaker Robert Eggers is making waves yet again, as he’s officially signed on to write and direct a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth for TriStar Pictures. The announcement comes hot on the heels of Focus Features revealing that Eggers will helm the upcoming gothic horror project Werwulf.
This exciting news caps off a stellar week for Robert Eggers, whose vampire epic Nosferatu recently garnered four Oscar nominations in Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. The film has also become the highest-grossing title of his career, pulling in over $156 million globally and standing as Focus Features’ second highest-grossing film in the U.S.

The upcoming Labyrinth sequel is not a remake but a continuation of Jim Henson’s beloved fantasy film. Plot details remain under wraps, but Robert Eggers will pen the script alongside frequent collaborator Sjón, with whom he also worked on The Northman and the upcoming Werwulf. Producing the project are Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus, along with Lisa Henson, while Brian Henson is set to executive produce.
The original Labyrinth, starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie, tells the story of 16-year-old Sarah as she journeys through a magical maze to rescue her baby brother from the clutches of the Goblin King. Although the film initially underperformed at the box office, earning $34 million against a $25 million budget, it later achieved cult status. Renowned for its innovative puppetry from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Labyrinth has inspired tie-in novels, comics, video games, and even an annual fan masquerade ball.
Efforts to develop a Labyrinth follow-up have been in the works since at least 2017, with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson previously attached to helm an earlier iteration of the project. Now, with Robert Eggers at the helm, anticipation is building for what promises to be a visionary continuation of the Labyrinth legacy.
Meanwhile, Robert Eggers’ other projects continue to generate buzz. His gothic horror film Werwulf, set for a Christmas 2026 release, remains shrouded in mystery, with Robert Eggers and Sjón once again teaming up as co-writers.
Robert Eggers’ rise to prominence includes a string of celebrated films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, solidifying his reputation as a master of atmospheric, genre-defying storytelling. With his attachment to the Labyrinth sequel, fans can look forward to seeing how Robert Eggers’ distinctive style will reimagine the beloved fantasy world for a new generation.
