Bridgerton’s heartthrob leading man, Regé-Jean Page, extended his talents to the SNL stage for his hosting debut Saturday night. Though known for his “dreamboat” like qualities on Netflix’s popular period drama, Page shed his leading man qualities for comedy throughout the episode. Here are our favorite moments.
Regé-Jean Page Takes On His Opening Monologue
While fans may know the actor as the sensual and handsome Simon in Bridgerton, Page tells the audience that he’s just a shy regular guy. Cast members Aidy Bryant and Ego Nwodim join in the fun, unable to contain their desire for the hunky star. Another cast member, Chloe Fineman, runs to the stage, dressed as Daphne, Page’s love interest in the series. With zoom-ins on Page’s face as jazzy music plays, he might try to persuade viewers that he’s not like his character, but we can’t get enough of his charming vocals and smoldering looks.
Actor’s Spotlight
British accents are the focus of this next sketch. Ego Nwodim plays a TV host who interviews One Night in Miami’s Kingsley Ben-Adir (Regé-Jean Page), Judas and the Black Messiah’s Daniel Kaluuya (Chris Redd), and rapper and actor Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson). The host becomes pleasantly surprised when discovering Ben-Adir and Kuluuya are British, fawning over the two actors. When Ice Cube decides he wants to be British as well, he hilariously butchers a British accent. This satirically shows Americans’ fascination with finding out actors playing American roles with believable accents could be English.
The Job Interview
This pre-recorded skit focuses on a failing ad agency that makes terrible ads for companies that didn’t hire them. Page stars as a candidate who interviews for the agency and Beck Bennett as the company’s CEO. The page shows his portfolio, filled with bad pitches ranging from “USPS: Go Fetch” to “Move Over Usain Bolt, There’s a New Bolt in Town.” Page hides his last idea, resulting in an intense noodle fight between the two. After Bennett sees the quote-on-quote “perfect” ad, Page dissolves into thin air. Though this skit was ridiculous and the wrong way to have a job interview, Page and Bennett’s hilarious chemistry shined.
Regé-Jean Page Experiences Uncomfortable Intimacy Coordinators
In a parody inspired by Bridgerton, Page reprises his role as Simon and Chloe Fineman as Daphne. As they are prepared to film a sex scene, they find out that their original intimacy coordinator had to be replaced by two inexperienced coordinators (Pete Davidson and Mikey Day). With the new coordinators’ crude suggestions, Page and Fineman feel more uncomfortable filming the scene. While it was no “real” Bridgerton scene, it emphasizes the importance of professional intimacy coordinators.
Regé-Jean Page Emotionally Rocks Out to “Driver’s License”
This sketch oozed pop culture, making it one of the most memorable of the night. Seven tough-demeanor men (Page, Thompson, Bennett, Pete Davidson, Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Bowen Yang) are playing pool at their local bar. When Page plays Olivia Rodrigo’s heart-wrenching breakup song “Driver’s License,” the men at first are confused but eventually get sucked into the alleged love triangle Rodrigo sings about. With cast member Kate Mckinnon’s help, playing an older man, the men sing along, consoling each other. The best part is when Yang lyrically dances in front of the group, feeling the effects of the lyrics.
Rodrigo took to Twitter, expressing her excitement over the use of her song in the show. It was a lovely gift to the young singer-songwriter as it was her birthday Saturday.
We burned for Regé-Jean Page’s first time hosting SNL! We can’t until Bridgerton returns, but until then, we’ll enjoy our time rewatching him on the SNL stage.
