Here are all the reasons why we think ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ will be coming to its final season!
As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, which certainly holds true for our favorite hospital drama, Grey’s Anatomy.
We’ve been following Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) journey through the show since 2005, but it looks like the end may be near.
Here are a few reasons why we think season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy could be it’s last.
In a statement to Variety, Pompeo said, “We don’t know when the show is really ending yet, but the truth is, this year could be it.” She later added on saying, “I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year? But it could very well could be.”
Fans of the show know that without Pompeo, there is no Grey’s Anatomy. The original creator of the show Shonda Rhimes has stated before in a past interview with E! News saying, “Ellen and I have a pact that I’m going to do the show as long as she’s going to do the show. So, the show will exist as long as both of us want to do it. If she wants to stop, we’re stopping.”
However, Rhimes is no longer the show-runner for the television series after signing a major $150 million deal with Netflix. She revealed the decision came after an executive at ABC told her she was asking for “too much” when she simply requested an extra Disneyland ticket for her daughter.
Krista Vernoff now serves as the show-runner, and although Vernoff has worked with Rhimes on the show before, having Rhimes no longer be the original show-runner feels as though the series has lost some of its spark.
Most of the original cast is gone, besides our beloved Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey, and Richard Webber. From characters such as Mark Sloan, Cristina Yang, and George O’Malley, we’ve seen many of our favorite characters come and go.
We must all admit the loss of Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy (played by Patrick Dempsey), was the most devastating death of the whole series. Although Meredith has other love interests in the recent season, I think we can all agree nothing can compare with the love she had with McDreamy.
Although season 17 could possibly be the end of Grey’s Anatomy, there are a few things we hope to see in this upcoming season.
For instance, will Meredith get out of her current love triangle between Andrew DeLuca (played by Giacomo Gianniotti) and Cormac Hayes, aka McWidow (played by Richard Flood)? Hopefully, this season she’ll choose between one of the two.
It will also be interesting to see how the show will tie COVID-19 into the plot. “We’re going to address this pandemic for sure. There’s no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes.” said show-runner Krista Vernoff.
As for now, we will have to wait for the season 17 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, which will air Thursday, Nov. 12, on ABC.
