Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, has roared into the spotlight, with reactions offering a mix of praise and skepticism.
Serving as a prequel to the 2019 live-action The Lion King, this film delves into the origins of Simba’s father, Mufasa, exploring his rise from a young cub to the king of the Pride Lands.
Critics and fans alike are praising Jenkins for giving depth to a character many felt deserved more backstory. Variety reported that is “Mufasa: The Lion King is the perfect prequel,” with some reviewers applauding its exploration of themes like resilience and identity.
I’ll be the first to admit that a Lion King prequel was not something I was asking for, but the animation is incredible, the songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda are infectious, and the vocal performances make #Mufasa – dare I say – better than the 2019 version of Lion King. (1/3) pic.twitter.com/7osrCByx2E

Many agree that Barry Jenkins’ involvement adds a layer of gravitas to the film. His ability to weave nuanced storytelling with larger-than-life themes is evident. Barry Jenkins has openly discussed his love for the Lion King franchise, sharing with WJTV, “I came to The Lion King by babysitting my nephews way, way back in the 1990s. My sister was a single mom and I’d be at home watching with the kids. You’d put on different VHSs and The Lion King was always the one that stuck. I just thought: ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting to, coming out of something like “The Underground Railroad” to step into this thing that’s so full of light’?”
MUFASA is lightyears better from THE LION KING (2019). Predictably nostalgic, but I don’t know, something about the Barry Jenkins magic that I found infectious here. The callbacks to Zimmer is a cheat code. I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. pic.twitter.com/P5yNV8dB5W

Since its release, Mufasa: The Lion King has sparked passionate discussions among fans, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts. Reactions were generally favorable among fans as they shared their astonishment and heartfelt appreciation for the film securing it’s spot within Disney’s beloved franchise.
#Mufasa is a fantastic prequel that outdoes the first photorealistic The Lion King movie by a mile with an original and engaging story, better facial animation, and fun songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It ties nicely to the previous film’s story and you get to see how it all started. pic.twitter.com/JNxVdW6FPS

Wow. I am shocked.#Mufasa is a DEEPLY emotional film, filled with great music and incredible visuals.
Disney righted every wrong from the original “live-action” remake, creating what might be one of the best “live-action” Disney film in YEARS. https://t.co/OyFxf5AS3M pic.twitter.com/N9yRjLtjwr

#Mufasa is a real mixed bag.
When it works, it really works. Mufasa’s rise can elicit big emotions.
But Scar’s fall felt unearned. His entire personality changes w/ 1 scene. There’s too many rushed plot lines.
Songs were all forgettable.
Moments of greatness. Many issues. pic.twitter.com/nfkucNBoHz
