The 2023 Oscars are on their way – and so is the fashion! Let’s predict what trending styles our favorite celebrities will dazzle the red carpet with at the 95th Academy Awards.
The pinnacle of red carpet fashion is soon to dawn upon us at the 2023 Oscars. Our favorite A-listers prepare glamorous, eye-catching looks for the most talked about night in Hollywood, and we’re excited to see what they bring to the table this year. The Academy Awards is one of the most extravagant nights in the world, and while the films take center stage, all eyes are really on the fashion of the night.
Last year’s best-dressed served in every sense of the word, and we expect nothing less this year. In 2022, we saw lots of stars bringing the red with them to the carpet, like Tracee Ellis Ross (in Carolina Herrera), Jennifer Garner (in Brandon Maxwell), Kirsten Dunst (in Christian LaCroix), and Simu Liu (in Atelier Versace).
Ruffled dresses were another style gleaming on many wardrobes from the night. Billie Eilish (in Gucci) and Jada Pinkett Smith
(in Jean Paul Gaultier) were the highlights among stars who flaunted ruffles.
Monochromatic suits, cutouts, and women in menswear were other notable trends that dominated Oscar fashion in 2022. While we expect to see a few similarities, here are 5 fashion trends we’re anticipating for the 2023 Oscars.
Sustainable Fashion
These days everyone is becoming more environmentally conscious, and vintage wear is trending. Stars have always reached into the vaults of high fashion to make a statement with vintage pieces, like In 2006 when Jennifer Lopez sported an olive green Jean Dessés gown from 1959. But now more than ever, we’re seeing not only more vintage pieces but stars re-wearing their own old looks. At the 2020 Oscars, Jane Fonda wore an elegant Elie Saab gown she wore at the 2014 Cannes Festival. And Cate Blanchett, who’s been known for chic red carpet re-wears, styled an Alexander McQueen dress with a black blazer at the 2022 Oscars, the same dress she wore in 2020 at the Venice Film Festival. So it’s safe to say we may see some familiar looks on the carpet this year.
Ruffles
Yes, ruffles again! Ruffles are here to stay, and the fashion world is making that clear. Both the Golden Globes and fashion month are giving us a preview of what we may expect to see for red carpet fashion at the Oscars, and ruffles are still in. Celebrity stylists were in full attendance and scouting at Paris Fashion Week in preparation for the Super Bowl of red carpets, and we can only imagine the couture pieces they will don for their celebrity clients. Jenna Ortega (in Gucci) and Quinta Brunson (in Christian Siriano) already showed off their ruffled gowns at the Golden Globes this year. And among the haute couture shows at Paris Fashion week, Victor & Rolf and Valentino had a number of ruffled fashion spectacles that we hope to see on the red carpet soon.
Black & Red
Tried-and-true colors of the night, stars donning black or red wardrobes make statements even with the most subtle designs. Elegance naturally exudes whenever someone struts the red carpet in one of these colors, and we’ve consistently seen refined red carpet Oscar looks from stars in red or black over the years. Take a look at Nicole Kidman (in Balenciaga) at the 2007 Oscars, Angelina Jolie (in Atelier Versace) at the 2012 Oscars, Charlize Theron (in Dior) at the 2016 Oscars, Lady Gaga (in Alexander McQueen) at the 2019 Oscars, and Angela Bassett (in Alberta Ferretti) at the 2021 Oscars.
Balloon Sleeves
Slowly but surely, balloon sleeves are making a comeback. We’ve seen many ‘90s and ‘70s trends resurfacing, but clearly, the 80s want a stake in today’s fashion too. Once again, celebrities at the Golden Globes are setting the tone for red carpet fashion, and the biggest fashion icon of them all turned heads with her custom all Black Schiaparelli gown. She may have missed the red carpet, but Rihanna’s dramatic ensemble still reigned supreme as best dressed for the night. Selena Gomez showcased a balloon sleeved look with her two toned Valentino dress and Niecy Nash in Dolce & Gabbana. We’ve also seen stunning balloon sleeves in Spring/Summer 2023 couture collections from Giambattista Valli, Valentino, and Alexandre Vauthier.
Avant-Garde Collars
The category is Drama! Avant-garde collard looks were a highlighting trend from Paris Fashion week, and it only makes sense for stars to take note of that on the red carpet. The Oscars are a go big or go home event, and we think we’ll see some eccentric collars on this year’s red carpet. Check out these extravagant haute couture collars from Ellie Saab, Armani Privé, Valentino, and Jean-Paul Gaultier’s shows.
