Oscar Isaac has been set to play the lead in the Marvel and Disney+’s series ‘Moonknight’
Oscar Isaac isn’t quite done with Disney quite yet. Just a year after the final film of the new Star Wars trilogy hit theaters, Isaac has found his next blockbuster vehicle in the Disney + series Moonknight. Isaac will play the title character named Marc Spector, a mercenary who becomes the living vessel of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Upon gaining these powers, Spector invests his money and uses his newfound riches to stop crime. The catch is that Spector is able to assume multiple identities to keep his ear to the streets and perform detective work. Whether it’s a lowly cab driver or high powered millionaire, we know Oscar Isaac has the talent to pull them all off. However, problems begin to arise with Marc when the personalities start taking on wants and desires of their own. Marc not only has to battle crime on the streets, but also his own mental turmoil.
This new show is one in a long series of projects by Marvel for Disney+. Moonknight will hopefully premiere in 2021 along with Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk and newcomer Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. These three are expected to be released after WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki. As opposed to the spectacle of Marvel’s big screen blockbusters, these shows will offer a more intimate look at some of our favorite superheroes. The multiple episode format gives an opportunity to dive into the personal lives and emotions of the characters. Oscar Isaac is no stranger to this, he won a Golden Globe for his touching performance as the youngest mayor of Yonkers in Show Me a Hero. There is no doubt that he will be getting awards attention for this role as well.
This isn’t Oscar Isaac’s first foray into the superhero genre. He previously played the villainous Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse. The film was released prior to Marvel reacquiring the film rights to the X-Men franchise, so this is the perfect opportunity for Isaac to start over in the Marvel universe. Moonknight and Isaac won’t be restricted to our screens at home. Last year, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed MoonKnight will have a significant role in the MCU going forward. This makes Isaac’s part as MoonKnight Marvel’s first prominent Latinx hero. The character of Marc Spector is also Jewish, so it will be interesting how he handles his faith when confronted by an Egyptian God. It also marks the supernatural direction phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going in.
Moonknight will be brought to the screen by Jeremy Slater, who has already had comic book adaptation success with The Umbrella Academy. The series is still looking to tap a director to serve at the helm of the pilot and other episodes. However, if you need your Oscar Isaac fix sooner then that, don’t worry. Isaac has been keeping extremely busy since finishing up with Star Wars. He plans to star in HBO’s television series Scenes from a Marriage, reuniting with his old Julliard classmate Jessica Chastain. As for when we return to theaters, Isaac is set to play Timothee Chalamet’s father in Denis Villeneuve’s retelling of Dune and a gambler in Paul Schrader’s thriller The Card Counter.
