Oprah asks people to put themselves in Breonna Taylor’s mothers’ shoes as she describes her murder at the hands of police in her own home and tells why billboards are a form of protest
Those who thought Oprah might be done with crusading against police violence were sorely disappointed as she set her sights on a new project. We reported earlier this month when Oprah turned over her magazine cover, for the first time in its 20 year history to the slain EMTs portrait. But she’s outdone herself by covering the city of Louisville Kentucky, where Breonna Taylor was murdered at the hands of police, with a distinct call to action.
The media mogul has erected 26 billboards-one for every year of Breonna’s life. Oprah asserts in a new video posted to Instagram, that this is her form of protest and implores others,
“We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice.”
The Billboards have the same portrait that graced The Oprah Magazine cover this month and urges,
“Demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged”.
Oprah also encourages us to put ourselves in Breonna’s mothers’ shoes asking,
“What would you want to happen now? Would you be content to hear…that not one has been held accountable for shooting your innocent daughter multiple times and letting her life bleed out?
It also invites folks to visit the Until Freedom website.
“Until Freedom is an intersectional social justice organization rooted in the leadership of diverse people of color to address systemic and racial injustice.
Lady O gets even more real in the video, proclaiming,
“If not for CoronaVirus, I would be out in these streets, marching with Black Lives Matter protestors.”
Spoken like a true Queen. We are saddened and outraged that justice for Breonna Taylor is taking so long, but are proud to see Oprah championing this cause.
