Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Fan Theories

Fans have been loving Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building! With only the finale episode left, we’re taking a look at the best fan theories that answer the question: who killed Sazz Pataki?

Marshall Pope/Rex Bailey

At the end of “Escape from Planet Klongo,” it was revealed that Sazz Pataki’s stuntman protégé was none other than the meek screenwriter for the Only Murders in the Building movie, Marshall Pope (Jin Ha). Director Ron Howard, in a hilarious cameo, reveals to Charles Hayden-Savage (Steve Martin) and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) that he had fired and blacklisted Rex Bailey after an on-set accident. Ron Howard’s picture of Rex looks almost identical to Marshall Pope, except he has long blonde hair and lack of beard. Further implicating Marshall, Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) discovers the original script for the Only Murders in the Building movie in the case of beers that Sazz left behind. Sazz was the original author of the screenplay, which Marshall seems to have stolen and passed off as his own. In the final moments of the episode, it was revealed that Glen Stubbins was smothered by a person who looked like Marshall without the beard.

However, given that this reveal came in at the end of the penultimate episode, fans are sure there is more to the story. Mabel, Charles, and Oliver have deduced that the shooter of Sazz would have to have an accomplice to get to the body and remove it so quickly, or had to be a very athletic person. Is Marshall disguising himself to prevent being recognized from his stunt-double past, or is Rex his twin that he teamed up with to get revenge? With all of the imagery of twins and doubles that have been present this season, it’s a possibility!

Glen Stubbins

Glen Stubbins was at the top of the suspect list for many Only Murders in the Building fans, but after his apparent murder this week, viewers aren’t so sure. Paul Rudd returned to Only Murders in the Building after Ben Glenroy was murdered in Season 3 as the down on his luck stunt-double for Ben, Glen. However, Glen seemingly died at the end of the penultimate episode, but, we never actually see him dead, and he is a stuntman! Could they be working together? After all, Glen offered to be Charles’ new stunt double immediately after meeting him. Since Ben’s death, he has been out of work, like Marshall/Rex. Did they team up to get rid of their competition?

Bev Melon

Only Murders in the Building fans have also been suspect of high powered movie producer Bev Melon. The gang discovered Bev hiding out at Sazz’s new stunt person training center in Season 4 Episode 5, “Adaptation.” Bev, played by Molly Shannon, revealed that Sazz left a voicemail for her before her murder stating there was “a major problem with the movie.” Bev says she was at the training center because she is terrified of any problem happening with the movie because her career is in trouble after passing on Barbie. We knew Bev bought the script from Marshall. Now that we know Marshall likely stole the script from Sazz, fans are left wondering, was Bev motivated to kill Sazz? Could Bev be Marshall/Rex’s accomplice?

Sazz Pataki

Could Sazz Pataki have planned out the most elaborate stunt of all: faking her own death? Sazz Pataki, played by Jane Lynch, has been shown to be a master of stunts throughout her time on Only Murders in the Building. Furthermore, fans noticed that we’ve seen Sazz Pataki dying, but never dead. The proof of her death was the custom metal joints implants found in the Arconia Building’s incinerator, however, it’s possible Sazz Pataki could have procured another set to fake her death.

We discovered Sazz Pataki likely wrote the original movie script and she mentored Marshall/Rex, but we haven’t seen it, is this season her script coming to life? Is the movie she pitched about Mabel, Charles, and Oliver solving her murder? The Brothers Sisters have a history of making experimental films and they are constantly recording the gang. It may be wishful thinking, but fans would be shocked and delighted to see Sazz Pataki still alive!

Howard Morris

Could the lovable Howard Morris be behind the murder of Sazz Pataki? Fans of Only Murders in the Building have been growing suspect with Howard, who has been trying unsuccessfully all season to get Mabel involved with his podcast Animal Jobs and has always wanted to be a part of the investigative crew. Could Howard have killed Sazz to try and stop the movie that would take the trio further away from him? Was he fed up with getting taken advantage of?

There have been lingering unsolved mysteries from earlier seasons like the mysterious notes left on doors in the first season that have made their way back onto the murder board. Since Howard, played by Michael Cyril Creighton, is one of the only characters still around since Season 1, could he be responsible? Some fans think the individual who is threatening and surveilling Oliver, Mabel, and Charles is unrelated to the killer, could this be Howard? Plus, Howard has had so much access to the trio’s apartment where the hidden cameras were placed!

You’ll have to tune in this Tuesday, October 29th to get all the answers! The season finale of Only Murders in the Building releases on Hulu and Disney+ at 12:00 AM EST! Get your popcorn and sleuthing skills ready!
