Created and executive produced by Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Netflix‘s North of North blends heartfelt storytelling with sharp comedy. “While these stories are all fictional, a lot of them come from grains of truth in our lives,” MacDonald shared. “It feels like we’re opening up our diary to the world, which is scary but also incredibly cathartic.”
Starring Anna Lambe as Siaja, alongside Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Jay Ryan, and Tanya Tagaq, the series was filmed in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and Toronto, Ontario. Lambe described her deep connection to the role: “With this character, I saw a story that I was familiar with, about so many people that I grew up with. That drove me to want to be a part of telling this story.”
Alethea Arnaquq-Baril emphasized the show’s balance of humor and authenticity: “The best part about this job is trying to paint a true picture of humanity through comedy—because sometimes the most beautiful and powerful illustrations of that come when we are at our most ridiculous and raw.”
With a mix of veteran and up-and-coming Indigenous talent, North of North offers a fresh perspective on modern Inuit life and is set to make a major impact when it debuts on Netflix.
