We’re giving you the list of book-to-screen Hulu series you have to add to your watch list!
The Television world has witnessed an explosion of book adaptations this year. This past week, Hulu introduced a #BookTok favorite to their platform: Conversations with Friends, based on the novel by Sally Rooney. Summer is rapidly approaching and there is no better time to catch up on your reading (or Hulu binging)!
Whether you read the novels or not, these Hulu adaptations MUST be added to your watch list!
Normal People
While Sally Rooney fans are buzzing over the debut of Conversations With Friends, did you know it’s not the first Rooney novel to grace television? Normal People debuted on Hulu in 2020 and starred pop culture favorites Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Based on the New York Times Bestseller, Normal People follows the romantic relationship of Marianne and Connell as they transition through their school years in small-town Ireland. The limited series received an abundance of critical acclaim at the 72nd Emmy Awards.
The Handmaid’s Tale
On a less romantic note, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale aired on Hulu in 2017 and has been going strong for four seasons. The timely series features celebrated actress Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne. The show brings Atwood’s poignant plot and characters to life in a masterful way.
Little Fires Everywhere
Little Fires Everywhere, based on the drama novel by Celeste Ng, features powerhouse actresses Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington at its’ heart. The book spent 48 weeks on the New York Times’ hardcover-fiction best-seller list prior to its adaptation. Little Fires Everywhere explores the themes of motherhood and identity through the stark dichotomies of two families.
Castle Rock
Calling all thriller fans! Castle Rock is a psychological-horror series set within the Steven King multiverse. Hulu refers to the series as a “first-of-its-kind reimagining that unites King’s themes and worlds and brings together the author’s most iconic and beloved characters”.
Nine Perfect Strangers
Nicole Kidman and the creators of Big Little Lies reunited to create an adaptation of yet another Liane Moriarty novel. Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers follows eight carefully selected city-dwellers as they convene for a vacation at a wellness resort, though the retreat and its’ host aren’t exactly as they seem. Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, and Michael Shannon are just three of the actors appearing in the star-studded cast. The series is rumored to be slotted for a second season, though no confirmation has been made by Hulu.
