After seven weeks at the top of the box office, Avatar: The Way of Water has been dethroned by M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. Here’s what social media has to say!
Believe it or not, we are already in the second month of 2023! January has come and gone, and despite several new releases (M3GAN, missing, Plane, ect.) Avatar: The Way of Water has been top of the box office the entire year. That is until this past weekend when M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin claimed the top spot. With a $14+ Million opening and a fresh score from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, this is another hit from the master of twists.

This is highly of note, not only because it’s the first new release of 2023 to top the box office, but because Shyamalan has personally been financing his films since 2015.
“I literally mortgaged my house.”
It’s still amazes me that M. Night Shyamalan has been financing all his own films starting with THE VISIT. This gives @MNightShyamalan an incredible amount of artistic freedom.

Like most horror movies (and especially M. Night Shyamalan movies) initial reactions have been somewhat divisive, but people are mostly positive. People are also surprised by how emotional the film gets.
Loved KNOCK AT THE CABIN, Night’s latest intense, personal, deeply, deeply weird examination of faith, doubt, and certainty, and how they each have the power to be both redemptive and truly unspeakably terrible. Stylish as hell, and Bautista kills it. pic.twitter.com/PX4hrcPM8x

Blown away by Knock at the Cabin. Apocalyptic anxieties writ small as a group of people swimming with contradictions crash into one another, all struggling with “how do we keep each other safe?” Love? Violence? Both? Shyamalan continues to be our most empathetic filmmaker. pic.twitter.com/bBRNxW3ZWb

While the movie is dark and suspenseful, that hasn’t stopped people from having fun with it.
“We were called and united by a common vision, which has now become a command we cannot ignore. The four of us are here to prevent the apocalypse. Your family has been chosen to make a horrible decision.” pic.twitter.com/775HBGThTP

The acting has also been a stand out for many viewers, especially Dave Bautista and Rupert Grint.
Dave Bautista is rightly going to come in for a lot of praise for his work in KNOCK AT THE CABIN, but can we take a moment to appreciate Rupert Grint in this movie? I’ve never seen him disappear into a role this well before, and he gives the film a lot of its early tension. pic.twitter.com/EkTzr26xI2

Star Ben Aldridge, and his looks, have also been a big topic of discussion.
Ben Aldridge is so deeply sexy in every scene in Knock at the Cabin, to the point where it was distracting.

Almost all my mutuals’ Letterboxd reviews of KNOCK AT THE CABIN being about Ben Aldridge… the agenda is spreading pic.twitter.com/WJ2bkn0wAd
