The Plot

After the events of the Joker, the sequel will be focusing on the love story between Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, or Arthur Fleck, and now Lady Gaga’s portrayal of the iconic character, Harley Quinn. The two are set to meet and “embark on a doomed romantic adventure” after crossing paths in Arkham State Hospital, according to This Is Wiltshire.

Back to direct the long awaited sequel to the Joker, which was released back in 2019 on the same day, is director Todd Phillips. Todd Phillips is well known for other films such as The Hangover trilogy, War Dogs, and Old School. In control of this sequel is Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. Pictures.

The cast is also set to include Arthur Fleck’s neighbor Sophie Dumond, played by Zazie Beetz, who is well known for her other performances such as in Deadpool 2, and Bullet Train. The Fans

Unlike the Joker from 2019, what fans should expect from Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical-like direction that has been taken. According to the team behind making Joker: Folie à Deux, the film “isn’t a musical, but is instead a film where the main characters break into song to describe their feelings when spoken dialogue isn’t enough. And also, the characters sing like they would exist in the world of the movie, not on a Broadway stage”, from an article by Out Magazine

The Critics

Joker: Folie à Deux premiered at the 81st Venice Film Festival on September 4, receiving a 12 minutes standing ovation. As far as the critics reviews go, Joker: Folie à Deux received a 8.4/10 from IMDb, 63% from Rotten Tomatoes, and 3.5/5 stars from Screen Rant

While the critic’s reviews seem to be mixed, it is weighted on the positive side, and fans should be excited to experience the film for themselves. However, before the actual release of the film, many critics have said similar things, such as Lady Gaga not having quite as much screen time as expected, and that the film keeps its dark and serious tone, similar to the Joker, 2019.

Many different reviews and outlooks on the film can be read on the Rotten Tomatoes Review section.
