Melissa Barrera is a Mexican born actress and singer. She was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, and she first started acting, participating in middle school plays like The Wizard of OZ. She played Juliet in her first professional acting job for a Mexican production of Romeo and Juliet.

She was accepted into the Collaborative Arts Project 21 in New York in 2009 and then returned to Mexico to participate in the reality show La academia. Her first appearance in a telenovela came in La Mujer de Judas in 2011, although her first lead and breakout role in a telenovela was in Siempre Tuya Acapulco.

Beyond the Scream franchise, Barrera also starred in the film version of the Broadway musical, In the Heights. She can also be seen on Netflix in Keep Breathing.

Barrera was named the first ever Latina ambassador of skincare and makeup brand Clinique. It is one of the biggest skincare brands, with stores in 135 different countries.

In 2013 Barrera was part of a duet group called Melissa y Sebastian, with which she released her first album. She recorded a top ten hit titled “Mamma Maria.”

Barrera has been nominated for 6 awards, and She has won a Starmeter award as “fan favorite.” She has been nominated for an HCA award for best actress (In The Heights), HMMA award for onscreen performance (In The Heights), Imagen award for best actress (Vida), Satellite award for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical (In The Heights), and a WFCC award for Best screen couple (In The Heights).

She got married in 2019 to musician Paco Zazueta.
