Get to Know Hollywoods New Rising Star: Dominique Fishback

If you checked out Amazon Prime’s latest series Swarm, you’ve seen breakout actress Dominique Fishback’s stellar skills. Here’s everything you need to know about the newest heroine of Hollywood!

Like many with dreams of starring in a hit TV show or blockbuster film, Dominique Fishback’s acting background began in the theater. After auditioning for a performing arts school in New York and not getting accepted, the Brooklyn-bred star set out for any opportunity to hone her acting skills. At 15, she joined a theater company where she learned musical theater, writing, and acting.

She then attended Pace University, where she graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in acting. For her senior honors thesis, she wrote and performed a one-woman show called Subverted about the destruction of Black identity in America. This brought her a lot of industry exposure to casting directors, and from there, her career began to flourish.

Fishback already has big feature roles under her belt, from starring in The Hate U Give and The Deuce to voice acting in Disney’s Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. She even received a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the British Academy Film Awards in 2021 for her portrayal of Deborah Johnson in Judas and The Black Messiah working alongside Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield.

Speaking of acting legends, Fishback also worked with Jamie Foxx on the film Project Power, playing a teenage dealer who teams up with a local cop and former soldier (Foxx) to fight the power and danger a new mysterious pill on the market brings to their city. More recently, she starred in Samuel L. Jackson’s limited series on Apple TV+, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, playing a teenage caretaker to a sick elderly man, Ptolemy (Jackson).

With her latest role in Swarm, the multi-faceted actress took on the challenge of playing a character vastly different from anything she’s done before. Donald Glover is the creator behind the new hit series that follows Fishback’s character Dre, a super fan whose obsession with a pop star goes down a dark path. Originally she was cast to play Chloe Bailey’s character in the show, Marissa, but called Glover and requested to play Dre stating, “I never want to catch up to myself as an actor.” Clearly, she made the right decision, as she’s received high praise for her performance as Dre.

You can expect to see a lot more Fishback over the next few years as she continues to blossom her way through Hollywood. She’s already locked in as the first Black woman to join the Transformers franchise, starring in their newest film, Transformers: Rise of The Beasts, coming to theaters June 9, 2023.

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this actress and are excited to see her continue to thrive!
