Following the news of Wynonna Earp’s cancellation, fans are campaigning for Netflix, or another network or streaming service, to pick up the show for a final season.
If you’ve been on Twitter recently, chances are you’ve seen the hashtag #BringWynonnaHome. Fans of the Syfy show Wynonna Earp are campaigning for another network or streaming service to pick up the show for a final season.
Starring Melanie Scrofano as the titular Wynonna Earp, the show follows the great great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp as she, her sister, the resurrected Doc Holiday, and the local sheriff banish demons and other creatures from their rowdy town, Purgatory.
While Syfy cancelled the show, the second half of season 4 is airing this March. However, fans are in an uproar, trying to find the show a new home. Fans like @80sEarper, @WayhaughtLunar, and @amygolucky69 are all sharing memes and quotes from the show, trying to create buzz about a potential season 5.
And we agree! Here are five reasons why Netflix should pick up Wynonna Earp:
Positive Queer Representation
The most groundbreaking and noteworthy part of the show, is it’s queer representation. Waverly Earp, played by Dominique Provost-Chalkley, and Nicole Haught, played by Katherine Barrell, are in a dynamic and complex relationship. It’s not fetishized, and it avoids the trope of killing off queer characters for shock value. Nicole and Waverly have a healthy and sweet relationship, which makes a lot of queer fans feel represented.
It’s Female Led
3 out of 5 of the main characters are kick-ass women! Wynonna, Waverly, and Nicole, are all dynamic, complex characters. They’re strong and independent, and will stand up for themselves. However, their vulnerable side is also showcased, letting them be complex. They have flaws that allow them to be authentic and relatable. Netflix would TRULY be getting a gem if they were to pick it up!
The Series Had Already Been Renewed
Back in 2018, it was reported that the show had been renewed for season 4 and season 5. However, due to changes in the structure at Syfy, they canceled it instead. Many fans are upset that they are not getting the last season they were promised. By picking up the show, Netflix could give fans a satisfying conclusion as they did with Lucifer. And that’s something we most definitely want to see!
It’s Already Won Awards
If Netflix were to pick up the show, they would be adopting an award-winning show into their repertoire! Multiple organizations have recognized it’s achievement, and it’s won Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy show, Best Dramatic Series, and Best Cross-Platform project and more! It also has been considered the modern-day equivalent to Buffy the Vampire Slayer! What’s not to love about that?
Wynonna and Doc Holiday’s Relationship
As Den Of Geek has said, the show is smartly written, and one of the most interesting relationships is between Doc Holiday, played by Tim Rozon, and Wynonna. It’s a multi-layered and complex relationship that doesn’t adhere to the will they/won’t they trope. In the show, it’s never a question of whether Wynonna and Doc love each other. They constantly prove their love, and the challenges they face come from interior character issues that don’t threaten their relationship. We think that this dynamic isn’t one that’s seen on tv a lot, and we think it deserves more time to shine.
