Film Overview

Gladiator II was released officially to theaters on November 22, 2024, over 24 years after the original. Gladiator was released in May of 2000, and starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, Joaquin Phoenix as Commudus, and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla. Back directing Gladiator II is Ridley Scott once again. 

Gladiator II is set several years after the events of the first film, and follows the story of Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. Supporting his performance is Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, and many others. With all that said let’s see what fans are saying about Gladiator II so far. 

Many fans had a rather positive outlook on Gladiator II saying it was overall a very well constructed film that was on par with the original. Fans also noted that they believed that Denzel Washington was the standout performance and loved seeing him on their screens. 

However when it comes to making a sequel to a widely beloved film such as Gladiator, there are bound to be mixed feelings and opinions on what Gladiator II could have done better. From questioning the historical accuracy, to the story and narrative the film portrayed, there were people giving their thoughts from all angles, positive, negative, and all things in between. 

Overall Gladiator II brought a lot to the table, with interesting directing and clever acting, it made for a sequel that will bring in new viewers, and have some fans of the original going to theaters to see a sequel to a film they love.
