Film Overview
Gladiator II was released officially to theaters on November 22, 2024, over 24 years after the original. Gladiator was released in May of 2000, and starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, Joaquin Phoenix as Commudus, and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla. Back directing Gladiator II is Ridley Scott once again.
Gladiator II is set several years after the events of the first film, and follows the story of Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. Supporting his performance is Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, and many others. With all that said let’s see what fans are saying about Gladiator II so far.
Gladiator II is magnificent. An epic of historical fiction the likes of which we rarely see nowadays. It’s a worthy sequel to the 2000 classic and it’s much better as whole than I expected it to be.

This was fun as hell and I want to watch it again.

– The battle scenes are top-notch

#GladiatorII ups the action & scale, but lacks the emotional substance of the first. It’s bigger & louder, but basically a recycled narrative that felt stale. Some strange decisions throughout. Denzel was fun, the rest of the cast is solid & there’s cool action. It’s okay?

Gladiator 2 was good. But I can’t help but feel let down. Denzel was eating up the screen, but there was no real emotional weight to the story even though they tried with the call backs. Man, I wish it was better. 7/10.

However when it comes to making a sequel to a widely beloved film such as Gladiator, there are bound to be mixed feelings and opinions on what Gladiator II could have done better. From questioning the historical accuracy, to the story and narrative the film portrayed, there were people giving their thoughts from all angles, positive, negative, and all things in between.
It’s good but the real villain is not given enough time as the villain needing to be vanquished.

Overall Gladiator II brought a lot to the table, with interesting directing and clever acting, it made for a sequel that will bring in new viewers, and have some fans of the original going to theaters to see a sequel to a film they love.
