Whether you’re a fan of the novel or looking for a new series to binge, keep reading to learn all about Netflix’s new war drama.

What is the series about?

The series tells parallel stories about a blind French Girl, Marie-Laure, and a German orphan boy, Werner Pfennig, whose paths collide in the final days of World War II.

Marie was only 12 when the Nazis occupied Paris, forcing her and her father to flee the city to live with her uncle in the French coastal town of Saint-Malo. Before leaving, her father takes a mysterious and valuable jewel from the Paris Museum of Natural History, where he worked. Her uncle is an educational radio broadcaster across Europe.

Simultaneously, we learn the story of Werner, a young orphan from a German mining town fascinated with radio repair. Werner becomes an expert in fixing radios and is enlisted by the German Army to use his talent to track down illegal broadcasts. The lives of Marie and Werner intersect when Werner detects her uncle’s radio broadcast, creating a captivating story.

Does Warner reveal Marie’s uncles’s broadcast to the Nazis? You’ll have to watch the series or read the book to find out!

Is there a trailer?

Yes! Earlier this month, Netflix released an official trailer, giving viewers a sneak peek into the world of the characters.

Cast

Aria Mia Loberti will make her acting debut as Marie-Laure. She is currently a Penn State Ph.D. student and was selected for the role after producer Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Free Guy) opened a worldwide casting call for low-visioned actresses. Mark Ruffalo will play her father, Daniel LeBlanc, a locksmith at Paris’ Natural History Museum, and German actor Lewis Hofman will play Werner Pfennig.

Locations

The series was filmed between March and July 2022 in various European cities, including Budapest, Saint-Malo, Soponya, Villefranche de Rouergue, and Berlin. Levy chose to cast Ukrian refugees as extras in the show since the filming locations border Ukraine.
