As ‘Aquaman 2’ closes out the year for DC movies, a new era ushers in which will bring James Gunn and Peter Safran’s vision to life. Here’s every update you need about upcoming DC movies 2024 and beyond.
In the past year, a lot has been going on at DC behind the scenes, while the studio has been in a fix for a long time regarding their superhero slate, newly appointed CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran came up with an expansive ten year plan with a plethora of movies and series. As we near the release of the last remnant of Zack Snyder’s envisioned universe with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom right around the corner, here is the progress report of previously announced titles.
Superman: Legacy
Perhaps the most talked about title in the upcoming DC slate is Superman: Legacy. The new feature will follow a younger version of the character living in Metropolis. Gunn, who is set to write and direct the movie, previously revealed, “It is not an origin story, it focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” And now he has found his cast, David Corenswet is set to don the cape as Superman while The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan will play as The Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. The movie also cast Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

The Brave and the Bold
The DCU will get its own Batman and the Bat family in The Brave and the Bold, based on Grant Morrison’s Batman run. The movie has found its director in The Flash’s Andy Muschietti who showcased his prowess by working with not one but two different versions of the Caped Crusader in The Flash (three if you count George Clooney in). With talents like Gunn and Muschietti The Brave and the Bold is in pretty safe hands. As the movie focuses on the softer side of Batman, which has never been explored in film before, seeing characters like Robin, Barbara Gordon, and Batgirl would be a treat for the fans.

James Gunn has revealed that a script for #Batman‘s THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD movie hasn’t yet been written:

Swamp Thing
DC’s Swamp Thing is a humanoid/plant creature, created by scribe Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, it has had several humanoid or monster incarnations in the comic and two movies in the past, however, in Gunn’s vision the film is set to explore the dark origins of the eponymous character, once known as the brilliant scientist Alex Olsen. Now the movie is in the hands of James Mangold, who is set to write and direct and he will lean into lean into the supernatural horror elements of the fan-favorite character.

Of course when we started charting the course for the DCU one of the first people I talked to was the super talented @mang0ld about writing and directing his passion project Swamp Thing. #SwampThing https://t.co/LoXZCMjrKy pic.twitter.com/WFMHQ60Aae

The Authority
Another interesting project that Gunn announced was The Authority, while no talents are yet attached to the movie, Gunn explained previously that the group doesn’t follow the traditional tropes of a superhero team. “There are people that are anti-heroes, and there are people that are very questionable, like The Authority, who basically believe that you can’t fix the world in an easy manner, and they sort of take things into their own hands.” If and when the time comes, it’ll be interesting to see the team behind this feature.

Supergirl: World of Tomorrow
Gunn’s Supergirl: World of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s comic book run of the same name. The director previously revealed that in his vision there’s a “difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant vs. Supergirl who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.” Well, that will make an interesting character distinction. Recently, Sasha Calle played a version of Supergirl in The Flash, it is uncertain whether she’ll return for the role but given Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle made the DCU cut, there are chances that Calle might get to reprise her role. As for creatives behind the scenes along with Gunn and Safran, King is attached to the project and we can expect a writer and director announcement soon.
