Prime Video sets May 22 premiere for Earnhardt, a four-part docuseries exploring the life, legacy, and family of NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt.
Prime Video is shifting into high gear this spring with the highly anticipated debut of Earnhardt, a four-part docuseries that delves deep into the life and enduring legacy of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. The series premieres May 22, with the first two episodes landing just days before Prime Video’s historic first broadcast of a NASCAR Cup Series race—the Coca-Cola 600 from Charlotte Motor Speedway. The final two episodes will follow on May 29, streaming exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
From the award-winning team at Imagine Documentaries and Academy Award-winning filmmakers Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin, Earnhardt brings together rare archival footage, gripping race sequences, and candid interviews from those who knew Earnhardt best—his family, friends, and rivals. Directed by Joshua Altman, the series offers an intimate, multi-generational portrait of the man behind the wheel, whose influence extended far beyond the racetrack.
Known to millions as “The Intimidator,” Dale Earnhardt was a larger-than-life figure who helped bring NASCAR into the national spotlight. His aggressive driving style and iconic black No. 3 Goodwrench Chevrolet made him one of the sport’s most feared and revered competitors. With 76 wins and a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup Series championships over a 26-year career, Earnhardt’s story is as much about grit and greatness as it is about legacy and loss.
Earnhardt also explores the racing dynasty he helped build. Raised by his own racing-obsessed father Ralph, Dale’s passion was passed down to the next generation, most notably his son Dale Earnhardt Jr., who would go on to become one of NASCAR’s most beloved figures. The series traces the triumphs and tragedies that defined the Earnhardt family, painting a complex and deeply human portrait of one of America’s most iconic sports families.
The episode breakdown is as follows:
Episode 101 – “Ironhead”: A rising star, Dale Earnhardt rockets to NASCAR stardom early in his career but must overcome personal and professional struggles. His gritty upbringing and alliance with team owner Richard Childress shape his path forward.
Episode 102 – “The Intimidator”: Earnhardt becomes the sport’s most feared competitor while pursuing Richard Petty’s historic record. Fame and danger escalate, and family tensions rise as the pressures of his career intensify.
Episode 103 – “One Tough Customer”: Now a household name, Dale chases his elusive Daytona 500 win amid challenges from a new generation of drivers. Meanwhile, the Earnhardt legacy expands as his children take to the track.
Episode 104 – “Dale”: The emotional finale centers around the 2001 Daytona 500, a pivotal moment where father and son raced side-by-side in what would become a defining event for the family and the sport.
Earnhardt is produced by Imagine Documentaries, Everyone Else, and NASCAR Studios, in association with Dirty Mo Media. Executive producers include Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Sara Bernstein, Christopher St. John, and Justin Wilkes (Imagine Documentaries); Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin (Everyone Else); and Tim Clark and John Dahl (NASCAR Studios).
The series joins Prime Video’s growing library of compelling sports storytelling and adds a powerful chapter to its sports programming just as the platform prepares to broadcast its first-ever NASCAR Cup Series race.
