Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Chris Evans has addressed speculation regarding his potential return for Avengers: Doomsday, denying reports that he will reprise his role as Steve Rogers in Phase 6 of the MCU.
With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, rumors have circulated about the return of key franchise stars, including Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. However, in a new interview with Esquire, Chris Evans firmly shut down the speculation, stating:
“That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it… Yeah, no—happily retired!”
Anthony Mackie, who is set to lead Captain America: Brave New World, also reacted to the reports, saying:
“I learned that right there. My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”
While Chris Evans has denied his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday, the MCU has a history of actors refuting rumors only for them to later be revealed as true. Past cases, such as Andrew Garfield’s repeated denials before his surprise return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, have led fans to question whether Chris Evans is simply keeping his role under wraps until Marvel Studios makes an official announcement.
Given the scope of Phase 6 and the possibility of alternate universe storylines, many believe Evans could still return—potentially as Hydra Captain America or in a multiversal capacity. With Avengers: Doomsday set to begin filming later this year, Marvel Studios may reveal more details at events like San Diego Comic-Con.
For now, Evans remains firm in his stance that his time as Captain America has ended. However, as with all things in the MCU, only time will tell.
