AFTERBUZZ TV – AfterBuzz TV’s Spotlight On edition, is a long form interview series featuring Actors and TV personalities discussing their roles and shows as well as their thoughts, passions and journeys. In this episode host Zach Wilson interviews Chef Brian Duffy.
Chef Brian Duffy’s bio: In the notoriously competitive restaurant world, a chef must be innovative, energetic, and fresh in order to stand out. No one does this better than Chef Brian Duffy.
Duffy developed his passion for cooking as a child, when his big Irish-Italian family would crowd into the kitchen to prepare their meals together. He went on to study the French method at The Restaurant School in Philadelphia, then worked under world-renowned Chef Jean Marie LaCroix at The Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia. From there, Chef Duffy partnered in opening Kristophers, a BYOB restaurant whose unassuming style and inventive dishes met with widespread critical acclaim.
But it was his innate flair for adventure that propelled Chef Duffy to the forefront of the celebrated gastropub movement. Duffy was among the first chefs in America to elevate modest pub food to epicurean status when he reinvented and revitalized classic Irish pub fare as Corporate Executive Chef of Kildare’s Irish Pub. Calling his cuisine New Celtic, Chef Duffy developed eclectic twists on traditional favorites that would stimulate the palate while appealing to the soul. As he explains it, “I get bored quickly, so I am constantly coming up with something new and cool with food. People want to be WOWED when they go out to eat, and I’ve got to be ready for them!”
Wowed they were. Chef Duffy’s New Celtic menu at Kildare’s brought record sales to the wildly popular Philadelphia-based chain. But even as he enjoyed this success, the ever-energetic chef was already looking toward his next adventure. Following his tenure at Kildare’s, Chef Duffy joined forces with Seafood America as a consultant and Executive Chef, where he developed Tapas Tonite. With the signature line of frozen retail products, Duffy created bold yet healthy dishes that introduced home cooks to a more exciting way of cooking and eating. His creations are available in grocery stores worldwide.
While balancing his accomplished culinary career, Chef Duffy has also carved out a second profession as a sought-Chef Brian Duffy cookingafter television personality. Making his debut on Food Network’s “Date Plate,” Duffy went on to appear on DIY Network, HGTV, NBC, Spike TV, and Fine Living Network. Chef Duffy has been featured annually on “The Today Show” since 2006 for the St. Patrick’s Day Irish cook-off, and — honoring his Philadelphia roots — makes monthly appearances on NBC Philadelphia’s “The 10! Show.” In addition to his prolific TV career, the famously dynamic chef is also the Culinary Spokesperson both for the GE Profile Series and for Residence Inn by Marriott.
Today, Chef Duffy works privately as a full-time consultant, helping restaurants to stand out and be profitable in a crowded market. He (and his motorcycle) can be seen on Spike TV’s “Bar Rescue,” where as Chef Expert he tours the country, reforming failing businesses with his down to earth yet no-nonsense approach and “tell it like it is” style. But despite his massive success, Chef Duffy is just as excited about cooking today as he was when he first started out. “I remember the first time I put my chefs jacket on, he says. That was it for me. I was hooked for life.”
