Though our hearts broke when Netflix canceled some of our favorites such as ‘Julie and the Phantoms’, or ‘Inside Job’, these shows should still be at the top of your lists! Here are some of the most devastating Netflix cancellations of the 2020s that fans believe deserve another chance!

It is always a bummer when our favorite shows get canceled before they can reach their full potential! Some of our favorite characters, storylines, and series are gone seemingly without reason. Fans are more than upset about these Netflix cancellations, but you still shouldn’t miss out. Even though they don’t have plans to continue, many of us are still holding out hope!

Julie and the Phantoms

Julie and The Phantoms, a fan favorite on Netflix, premiered on September 10, 2020. Julie and The Phantoms follows Julie, a teenage girl, who unveils her passion for music with the help of a boy band that had been dead for a quarter of a century. That’s right, a dead boy-band, what could possibly go wrong? Julie in return assists these lost souls to become the band they were almost meant to be! Though this show sounds a little cheesy, don’t be swayed! Viewers agree that watchers of any age will enjoy Julie and the Phantoms!

Netflix officially announced that this show would not be returning for a second season in September 2022. Though Julie and the Phantoms had gained traction and a large fan base many believe that since the audience skewed older than anticipated, it no longer fit Netflix’s intended audience. This show even though it has been 4 years since its original release, fans are still holding out for another season and have even petitioned for Julie and the Phantom’s to receive a second season and have gathered over 330,000 signatures!

Inside Job

If you love animated shows like Rick and Morty or Futurama, Inside Job would be the show for you! Inside Job follows Reagan Ridley, an awkward genius, as she manages the world’s conspiracies with her dysfunctional co-workers. Now believing in the shadow government is one thing, but working for it is a whole other level of crazy! Reagan and her right-hand man, Brett Hand, must protect the president and fight off lizard people, whilst hiding this all from the public!

Inside Job originally premiered on October 22, 2021 and ran for a single season. Inside Job had plenty of well-times jokes alongside its social commentary! Inside Job was received positively by both critics and the public where, Nick Schager of The Daily Beast reviewed it as “jovially mocks our brain-fried reality”, containing “sharp jabs at corporate power/gender dynamics” while critiquing the world of conspiracy theories. Inside Job had originally been renewed for a season 2 but then was reversed and canceled in 2023. Since Inside Job was left on a giant cliffhanger, fans were devastated to hear of its tragic cancellation, and many still hold out hope that Inside Job will be picked up for another season!

I am Not Okay with This

Need a dark comedy that could make you question your sense of self? Then look no further, as I Am Not Okay With This, follows Sydney, a teenage girl, as she navigates the halls of high school, the complexities of her family, her budding sexuality, and newly discovered telekinesis powers that are beginning to awaken inside her. From her crush on her best friend to the ongoing bullying at school, Sydney faces her everyday life whilst struggling with new unknown feelings inside. I am Not Okay with This was oh-so relatable and brought light to certain social commentary while creating a sense of fantasy and wonder.

Ending I am Not Okay with This on a cliffhanger left fans constantly wanting more. On August 21, 2020, Netflix canceled the series after one season, stating “COVID-related circumstances”. I Am Not Okay With This was such a relatable show that fans felt like they were in Sydney’s anguish. Many still feel as if this show remains in their heads even years later, following its tragic cancellation.

Shadow and Bone

Based on the Shadow and Bone Trilogy and Six of Crows Duology, Shadow and Bone follows as “dark forces conspire against orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov when she unleashes an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world.”After its initial season in 2020, the series was renewed for a second season in June 2021. Shadow and Bone season 2’s plot followed the latter two books in the series, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising!

After wrapping season 2 in 2021, Shadow and Bone met its untimely demise when Netflix cut it from producing another season. Fans of both the show and book series are at a loss for words after Shadow and Bones cancellation was announced.

The Society

What would you do if everything and everyone you knew, just vanished? The Society follows the teenagers of West Ham where the townsfolk mysteriously vanish and now they must forge their own society to survive. This mystery series was just beginning at the conclusion of season 1 in 2019.

Just when the mystery begins to unravel for The Society, this show devastatingly received news that it was not renewed in August 2020. Netflix announced that the show had been canceled due to complications of the pandemic having led to cost increases and difficulty scheduling production. This unfortunately caused us to lose a lot of our favorite shows at the time since the whole world was on lockdown. Even creator Chris Keyser vouched for the disappointment, “Saying goodbye so abruptly was the hardest thing I’ve had to do in all my years making shows.”
