Brad Pitt returns as Cliff Booth in a Quentin Tarantino-scripted sequel for Once Upon in Hollywood, now under David Fincher’s direction and heading to Netflix.
David Fincher is set to direct a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Quentin Tarantino himself penning the script. The highly anticipated follow-up, currently untitled, is being developed at Netflix, marking a major shift for the beloved property from the big screen to the streaming world. Brad Pitt will reprise his role as stuntman Cliff Booth, the enigmatic character that won him an Academy Award.
This collaboration brings together two cinematic powerhouses in a surprising twist—David Fincher, known for his precision and dark storytelling, taking on a Quentin Tarantino creation. The sequel also reunites David Fincher and Brad Pitt, who have previously delivered cult classics like Fight Club, Se7en, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Unlike the 2019 original, which was released theatrically by Sony Pictures, this sequel is being developed under David Fincher’s first-look deal at Netflix. The change is possible because Quentin Tarantino had previously negotiated ownership of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s underlying copyright, allowing him to control the rights for future adaptations.
The news comes after Quentin Tarantino scrapped what was intended to be his 10th and final film, The Movie Critic, which would have starred Brad Pitt as a film critic writing for a pornographic magazine in the 1970s. Speculation suggested Brad Pitt’s character in that film may have been a version of Cliff Booth, a movie buff according to Quentin Tarantino’s novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Instead, Brad Pitt will now officially return to his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood role.
Details about the plot remain under wraps, but it’s unclear whether Leonardo DiCaprio or Margot Robbie will return. Given David Fincher’s signature style—evident in Netflix projects like Mank and The Killer—the sequel is expected to take on a darker, more methodical tone, contrasting with Quentin Tarantino’s original blend of nostalgia and revisionist history.
This isn’t the first time Quentin Tarantino has handed off a script. He previously wrote True Romance for Tony Scott and From Dusk till Dawn for Robert Rodriguez. Now, David Fincher is set to bring his vision to Quentin Tarantino’s world, making for one of the most intriguing cinematic projects in recent memory.
With Netflix backing the production, fans won’t have to wait for a theatrical release—this Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel will be just a stream away. No release date has been announced, but the excitement is already building for what’s sure to be one of the most talked-about films in years.
