Borderlands: Everything We Know About the Film

Borderlands fires off soon, and fans couldn’t be more excited! Join us as we cover everything we’ve learned and what to expect from Lionsgate adaptation!

Borderlands is a franchise first released as a video game in October 2009 and has seen massive success throughout the years. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Borderlands carves a unique path in the first-person shooter world by creating a gritty narrative packed with dark humor and meshing it with an open world filled with action reminiscent of the Suicide Squad. With that being said, let’s dive into everything we know and how the movie will fit into the Borderlands universe!

The Plot

Borderlands has a pretty consistent plot system that most of the video games follow, and based on the synopsis, the adaptation will honor that. Our favorite band of vault hunters team up to find a key that holds insane power, fighting dangerous alien monsters and raiders on the way.

The Cast

In this case, we follow Lilith (Cate Blanchett), the infamous outlaw with a strange history, teaming up with Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary, desperate for redemption; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), a rhetorically challenged muscle-maniac; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral demolitionist in her pre-teens; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist with a surprising lack of sanity; and most importantly, Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently satirical robot. This unlikely team sets a course for Pandora, the most chaotic and unforgiving planet in the galaxy in order to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Édgar Ramírez).

So, who is Atlas? In the video games, Atlas is not a singular person but a megacorporation that manufactures weapons and spaceships to be distributed across the galaxy. The Borderlands movie will not be canon to the video game franchise, but it’s refreshing to have a unique spin on a fan-favorite video game.

The Rating

Borderlands is a historically depraved video game filled with obscenities, debauchery, and degenerate references. With that being said, Borderlands has received a PG-13 rating, so you can only expect around one expletive in the movie. Although the rating has been met with some backlash, we believe that being inclusive to most audiences will create greater awareness for the franchise that will push viewers to want to try the video games!

Overall, we’re always excited to see a nostalgic game get the recognition it deserves. You can catch Borderlands in theaters starting August 9th and streaming on Starz at a later date!
