The trailer for The Friend introduces an unusual but deeply moving companionship between Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, and a towering Great Dane.
Based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel of the same name, The Friend follows Iris (Naomi Watts), a writer and teacher mourning the loss of her close friend and mentor, Walter (Bill Murray). In the wake of his passing, she unexpectedly inherits his beloved dog, Apollo—a Great Dane whose sheer size and personality quickly take over her New York City life. From wrecking her apartment to dragging her through the streets, Apollo becomes both a challenge and a source of comfort as she navigates her grief.
Directed and adapted for the screen by Scott McGhee and David Siegel, The Friend also stars Constance Wu, Carla Gugino, and Ann Dowd. The film first premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, earning strong reviews, including praise from The Hollywood Reporter, which described it as a “fresh, unsentimental yet touching story.”
The Friend will debut in New York on March 28 before expanding to a wider release on April 4.
