If your local Target hasn’t made it clear enough, back-to-school season is officially upon us. There are only a few weeks left to binge your favorite show all night and sleep in until noon. There is no greater time than the present to enjoy television’s finest school series. Here are the best Netflix shows to get you in the back-to-school spirit, whether you are looking forward to it or not!
Community
Community offers 6 seasons worth of sitcom binging. Set at a community college, the hilarious show stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, and more. The show features former lawyer, Jeff Winger (played by Joel McHale), enrolling in community college to get a valid degree, as his first degree was from Colombia (the country) instead of Columbia (the university) as he had claimed (an honest mistake). He soon attempts to organize a fake Spanish study group in hopes of getting closer to classmate Britta Perry (played by Gillian Jacobs). If you’re looking for a relatable ensemble show chock-full of meta-humor and pop culture references, look no further!
Gilmore Girls
Gilmore Girls is a must-see cult classic starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as mother-daughter duo Lorelei and Rory Gilmore. Gilmore Girls is a Netflix staple for all, regardless of generation. The show is set in a storybook Connecticut town populated by an eclectic mix of characters. Gilmore Girls supplies excellent lessons on family and friendship with Rory’s journey from adolescence into adulthood and Lorelai’s navigation of motherhood and relationships.
Big Mouth
Not going back to school but still want to reminisce and join in the fun? Big Mouth is for you. Adult animated series Big Mouth stars comedians Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, and Jessi Klein as teenage fries whose lives get upended by puberty. The raunchy sitcom is sure to give you a laugh and make you very grateful your middle school days are behind you.
Stranger Things
If you are part of the small percentage of people who haven’t watched Stranger Things yet, consider this your sign. The award-winning series combines teen television, sci-fi, and horror into one revolutionary series. The show features school-age children, but the series is much more than that. Trust us, give it a watch, and let us know so we can say “I told you so”.
Friday Night Lights
Friday Night Lights is the epitome of high school television. The series follows a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, a small, close-knit community in rural West Texas. The show hits on a variety of American cultural issues like family values, school funding, racism, drugs, abortion, and lack of economic opportunities. This ensemble show is a must-watch for this back-to-school season.
