Are the Women of ‘Sex and the City’ Really Good Friends?

Sex and the City is an iconic show that has had people relating to one or more of the women throughout the years. Whether you’re a Carrie, a Charlotte, a Samantha, or a Miranda we’re discussing if we would want to be friends with these women in real life.

**DISCLAIMER**: And Just Like That… Spoilers Ahead!

As the women of Sex and the City have returned to television, there’s been a lot of discourse over the kind of friends each of the women are, and how good of friends they are to one another. Carrie seems to be the glue that holds her friend group together, as the other women did not seem to have much in common and often had petty arguments.

As And Just like That… has now taken these women through a new lense and launched discussions about these women’s interpersonal relationships, I couldn’t help but wonder … would any of these women be friends in real life, and would anyone want to be friends with them?

AfterBuzz is taking a look in-depth at the pros and cons of each of the four iconic leading ladies of SATC — we’ll let you decide if you’d want to be their Cosmo-drinking besties if given the chance.

Carrie

Carrie Bradshaw has been a popular topic of conversation recently, as fans old and new of the original show and now the reboot have been critically analyzing her and her actions, spawning quite a bit of online discourse.

Carrie was always ready to defend her friends at any given moment — and she did, from the gambler who heckled Miranda for her baby weight and the self-help expert who crossed a line with Charlotte. She could be very supportive and certainly had her redeeming moments, like when she took care of Samantha when she was sick or left Big to be with Miranda in the delivery room.

However, she often bailed on her friends for Big (who wasn’t even that good to her?), and for a self-proclaimed “sexual antrhopologist,” her views on sexuality were pretty limited to say the leasy. Carrie very rarely did anything that wasn’t selfishly motivated and wasn’t much for listening. She (unfairly) expected Charlotte to lend her a down deposit for her apartment after poorly managing her finances, she harshly judged Samantha for her sex life and she exploded on Miranda any time she set a boundary.

Charlotte

Charlotte, the group’s hopeless romantic, truly never wanted anything but the best for her friends. She is kind, thoughtful and is always there to lift her friends’ spirits. She has a delicate, maternal approach to her friends and is always rooting for them to get the best things in life. She said it best when she called the girls her soulmates.

The Princess of Park Avenue does have a tendency to be judgemental in the name of her personal beliefs though. She was often the ringleader of the criticisms of Samantha’s sex life and exploded on Miranda for her late-in-life sexual awakening. She also poorly handled her frustrations with being unable to conceive out on Miranda after finding out she’s pregnant.

Miranda

Miranda is a true blue friend. She stood by her girlfriends and was always there to give them advice, and was even most of their attorneys. She was a great listener and almost always had a solution to her friends’ problems. She even stopped to support Samantha at her own wedding after finding out she had breast cancer.

It could be argued that Miranda could be a little brutal — and it actually was once by Carrie during an argument over Big. Miranda could and would call it like it was and often did, teetering the line of being cold or harsh. Miranda also never truly appreciated Steve and often took him for granted, from the first time they met until she told him she wants a divorce in AJLT … Miranda is a perfectionist and has almost impossibly high standards, and is often unfairly disappointed and frustrated when the people in her life do not meet them.

Samantha

Samantha was incredibly supportive of each of her friends, despite all three of them slut-shaming her periodically throughout the show’s run. She was heavily ridiculed for her sexuality by each woman in the group and almost always was the one to apologize. She was loyal to a fault and would do anything to help her girlfriends — even forfeiting her treasured hair appointment so Miranda could get a trim and some me-time after having Brady.

When Carrie called Samantha to announce her engagement to Big, she had a less-than-stellar reaction — while it could be argued that she was just being honest, nobody should ruin a special moment like that. It was also pretty low of Samantha to up and relocate to London after Carrie no longer needed her as her publicist (it was also very unlike her).
