AFTERBUZZ TV – AfterBuzz TV’s Spotlight On edition, is a long form interview series featuring actors, actresses, and TV personalities discussing their upcoming projects as well as their thoughts, passions and journeys. In this episode host Yael Tygiel interviews Andrew Bowen.
ABOUT ANDREW BOWEN:
Andrew declared to his parents at age 6 that “he wanted to be like John Travolta when he grew up” and never looked back. At 18, after 12 years of musical theater in Vermont (8 of those studying Modern Jazz and Ballet) he headed to NYC and 4 months later he booked his first job – cast as George Stark in the Bill Murray Comedy “What About Bob?” A year later, Andrew relocated to LA and hasn’t stopped working since.
Thanks to some uncanny mimicry skills, an ear for dialects (he can do any) and the ability to seamlessly transition from broad-physical comedy to intimate dramatic roles…. Well, dedication to his craft, hard work and a bit of good luck didn’t hurt either….. Andrew has appeared in hundreds of projects over the years getting the chance to work with some of his hero’s including: Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead), Bill Murray, Uma Thurman, Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), Kevin Spacey, Jeffery Dean Morgan, Mitch Glazer (Magic City), Dana Brunetti (Fifty Shades of Grey), Aldis Hodge, Dean Devlin (Independence Day), John Rogers (The Librarians), Jason Reitman (Juno) and James Mangold (The Wolverine).
Andrew’s greatest love is character work. Although those roles don’t come along that often – he credits that to being “a character actor stuck in a leading mans body” – when the opportunities do arrive, Andrew immerses himself in his roles, often to unrecognizable ends.
This April, audiences will get a chance to see some of this character work as Andrew plays “Reggie”, the twistedly creepy star of “New Years Eve” – part of the horror anthology HOLIDAYS making it’s “World Premier” April 14th at the 2016 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL (releasing World-Wide the following day). And in the feature film PO , where Andrew plays 5 different incarnations of the character Jack, a role written specifically for him by director John Asher. This powerfully moving drama about Autism will be “World Premiering” at THE FESTIVAL DE CINE PANAMA April 10th, making it’s “North American Premier” at the PALM BEACH FILM FESTIVAL, April 13th and continuing onto THE NEWPORT BEACH and ALBUQUERQUE FILM FESTIVAL’s later in the month. Andrew is especially honored to be a part of PO as the film is partially dedicated to his own son Reece – who was diagnosed with Autism when he was 3 1/2.
Some of Andrew’s notable credits include: recurring roles on Starz’ MAGIC CITY, as a series regular on the comedy series MAD TV (where his impressions of Keanu Reeves and Nic Cage are legendary) performances on CRIMINAL MINDS, LEVERAGE, as Nick Trevor in his “Award Winning” web-series THE DIVISION (currently available on Hulu), the sci-fi comedy ROCK JOCKS , CONJURER and ‘THE GIFT’ (opposite Uma Thurman, produced by Dana Brunetti & Kevin Spacey).
Andrew has also lent his voice talents to some of the most successful video games of all time. He is the voice of Johnny Cage in WB’s hit MORTAL KOMBAT X, Josh Birk/NyteBlayde in the SAINT’S ROW series and Doc in the STAR WAR: THE OLD REPUBLIC to name a few.
Andrew recently finished work on Jennifer Garner’s TRIBES OF PALOS VERDES, can currently be seen in Maker Studio’s musical SUMMER FOREVER (with Megan Nicole & Alyson Stoner) and will be seen later this year in the black comedy ALL FOR NIKKI (with Grant Harvey & Gia Mantegna)
A producer, screenwriter and director Andrew is currently in pre-production on his second directorial effort RU 761, a sci-fi rescue short he will be shooting in May.
A lifelong and openly proud “Geek” (he was raised on Marvel Comics and Star Wars), Andrew is first a foremost a DAD, devoted to his three teenage kids and talented and stunning wife of 16 years, award winning photographer Renee Bowen. Their eldest son Reece was diagnosed with Autism at age 3 1/2 and they have been his tireless champions ever since. Both are active supporters of Autism charities, research and the ASD Community. You can read their story here.
Andrew’s goofy wit (often showcased on his his Instagram and Vine accounts), generous work ethic and ability to bring laughter and creative energy to everything he does has resulted in a supportive team of talented collaborators and a loyal fan base eager to support his continued journey as a creator, a father, a storyteller and a voice for compassion in the world.
