American Idol unveils its Top 10 after a tear-filled night of emotional performances, surprise eliminations, and unforgettable tributes.
Emotions ran high on the April 28 episode of American Idol, as Season 23’s Top 12 took the stage to pay tribute to some of the show’s most iconic performances—and left both judges and fans deeply moved. From breathtaking vocals to surprise eliminations, Episode 13 was one of the most powerful of the season.
With Grammy winner and Season 3 champion Fantasia serving as mentor, contestants were encouraged to dig into their personal stories and channel them into performances inspired by unforgettable American Idol moments from years past. And many couldn’t hold back their tears—including special guest Jelly Roll, who was visibly shaken during more than one performance.
One of the night’s standout moments came from Tulsa’s Kolbi Jordan, who tackled Judy Garland’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” inspired by Katharine McPhee’s 2006 rendition during Season 5. The performance was deeply personal for Kolbi, who said the song “inspires me to keep going.” As a single tear rolled down her cheek, her soaring vocals left the judges stunned. “That was divine,” declared Lionel Richie, while Luke Bryan added, “That was like somewhere over a supernova way out in the galaxy.” Jelly Roll could only cradle his face in awe.
Another emotional high point came from Jamal Roberts, who initially struggled to speak to Fantasia during rehearsal but brought her to tears with his powerful delivery of Tom Odell’s “Heal.” Sitting alone on a stool, Jamal’s understated performance had Carrie Underwood visibly awestruck, while Richie again called it “divinely guided.”
But the night also came with heartbreak. The audience’s votes sent two contestants home, including Ché, whose slowed-down version of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” wasn’t enough to secure him a Top 10 spot.
Even more shocking was the elimination of Filo—Season 23’s first platinum ticket winner—whose early fan support didn’t translate into votes.
Now, only 10 remain in the competition:
John Foster
Josh King
Jamal Roberts
Mattie Pruitt
Thunderstorm Artis
Slater Nalley
Gabby Samone
Canaan James Hill
Kolbi Jordan
Breanna Nix
Earlier this season, platinum tickets were awarded to Kolbi Jordan, Filo, and Canaan James Hill—though Filo’s journey has now come to an unexpected end.
As the countdown to the finale continues, fans can expect even more unforgettable moments from the talented remaining contestants.
