9 Summer Movies To Get Excited About!

Kids are getting out of school, the weather is getting warmer, and the Summer movie Season is upon us! From the biggest blockbusters to some smaller movies we’re excited about, here are the movies to look forward to this summer!

While it may be a few more weeks until summer starts in astronomical terms, the summer movie season is about to be upon us! Hollywood normally saves its biggest releases for the summer, but it feels like this year has wall to wall major releases. Here are eight movies you should be looking forward to in the coming months.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – Release Date: May 5th

Why you should be excited: As has been the tradition for the past 15 years, Marvel will be kicking off the summer movie season with a huge movie at the start of May. This year feels all the more exciting given that it’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Guardians movies have not only stood out not just in the MCU but in the entire superhero genre. Writer/director James Gunn always manages to fill these movies with such heart and genuine emotion, and this movie might just be the most emotional Marvel movie of all time. This clip alone is enough to bring a tear to the eye.

Fool’s Paradise – Release Date: May 12th

Why you should be excited: Charlie Day of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is making his directorial debut with this screwball comedy. Inspired by the silent comedies of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, Fool’s Paradise looks like a hilarious spoof of Hollywood stardom. With an all-star cast, including one of the final performances from the late-great Ray Liotta, this is a smaller movie you should try to make time for between the bigger spectacles.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – Release Date: June 2nd

Why you should be excited: While not the biggest box office hit, Into the Spider-Verse has rightfully become a fan favorite and a classic within its genre. From the looks of things, this sequel will continue what made the first film so special, with eye-popping animation and a great comic-book story to match.

The Flash – Release Date: June 16th

Why you should be excited: After years of anticipation and speculation, The Flash is finally coming out this year. The Scarlet Speedster getting his own movie would be reason enough to get excited but add in the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman and the introduction of Supergirl, and you have one of the biggest movies of the year. The film was actually shown earlier this week at CinemaCon and the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – Release Date: June 30th

Why you should be excited: Because it’s an Indiana Jones movie! Duh! But for real it’s hard not to be excited about Harrison Ford returning to one of his most iconic characters one last time, plus the inclusion of Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge just makes the whole thing all the more intriguing. This is the first entry in the series not to be directed by Steven Spielberg, instead Logan’s James Mangold will be stepping into the director’s chair. Mangold has a stellar filmography and has been able to step into multiple genres and franchises with ease. While it will be sad to say goodbye to this character, it’s exciting to get one last ride with this icon of cinema.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – Release Date: July 14th

Why you should be excited: The Mission: Impossible movies have been going on for over 20 years, yet they have always managed to stay fresh and exciting. Every film manages to top the last one in terms of stunts and action set pieces, and this one looks like no exception. After Tom Cruise blew us all away last year with Top Gun: Maverick, anticipation for this newest mission has only grown. This one is a must see in IMAX as we watch Ethan Hunt defy death for the seventh time.

Barbie/Oppenheimer – Release Date: July 21st

Why you should be excited: In a historic twist of fate, these two blockbusters will be released on the same day. Both Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan have been given massive budgets to make auteur-driven blockbusters, and we get to see them on the same weekend. What a time to be alive! Barbie looks like a hilarious and subversive romp (with Ryan Gosling as Ken, who could resist), while Oppenheimer looks like Nolan doing what he does best, but this time with a character-driver historical epic. These two movies couldn’t be different in terms of tone and style, but it’s hard to say which one to see first. Both look incredible and have a good chance to be some of the year’s best movies. No matter what, July 21st is going to be an exciting day at the movies.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter – Release Date: August 11th

Why you should be excited: August always provides us with some smaller interesting genre films, and this year we are getting a Dracula movie! The Last Voyage of the Demeter is adapting one specific chapter of Bram Stoker’s original novel, where Dracula makes his voyage to London, stalking the titular ship’s crew. The movie is basically Dracula on a boat. This looks like a refreshing adaptation of the source material and a scary way to end the summer movie season.

Make sure to check out all these films when they hit theaters this summer. See you at the movies!
