5 Video Game Movies You Need To Watch

Do you love video games? Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just curious, we’ve rounded up five video game-related movies that everyone can enjoy!

Pixels

Pixels, which was released back in 2015, is a visually pleasing film about aliens attacking earth taking the forms of old-school pixelated arcade games. Eventually, it is up to a few people who played the games a lot when they were kids, to fight back against the aliens and protect Earth. The film stars Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, Kevin James, and others. Overall, Pixels is a film that is fun for the whole family, and if you love video games, especially the classics, you’ll find fun in Pixels. It may not have received the best reviews critically, but has warmed the hearts of many. Pixels received a 5.6/10 on IMDb, 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 27% on Metacritic.

Tron: Legacy

Tron: Legacy focuses on a man, Sam Fylnn, played by Garret Hedlund, who is searching and looking into the disappearance of his father. He eventually is pulled into a cyber world, and faces all kinds of challenges and games alongside his friends and father, played by Jeff Bridges. Tron: Legacy gives the audience a wonderful experience of colors, futuristic technology, and so much more. This Disney film captures the essence of being in a video-game-like world, and exploring all it has to offer very well with a 6.8/10 on IMDb, 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 49% on Metacritic. 

Tron: Legacy is currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Next is a huge fan favorite in recent years, and that is Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was released in 2017. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black. The four play high school students who accidentally get sucked into a video game while in detention. They have to overcome dangerous challenges and quests in order to return to the real world making friends, and enemies along the way. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is generally well loved with a 7/10 on IMDb, a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 58% on Metacritic.

Free Guy

In the second spot comes the newest film on this list starring Ryan Reynolds as Guy, and that is Free Guy, 2021. This film follows the story of an NPC named Guy in a video game world, who ends up meeting a player that changes his entire life and purpose, deviating him from his usual programmed routine. Guy essentially becomes his own being despite the fact that he is supposed to be nothing more than an AI in a game world. Free Guy is full of fun moments that any gamer will appreciate, and has much more to offer if you are not. It received a 7.1/10 on IMDb, an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 62% on Metacritic. 

Free Guy is currently available on Disney+.

Ready Player One

A fan favorite when it comes to video game films is Ready Player One, released in 2018. This film has it all, a great plot and profound message, action, romance, comedy, you name it. It focuses on several characters and their quest to find a hidden easter egg in a virtual world known as OASIS. The main protagonist Wade Watts, played by Tye Sheirdan, wants to find this egg to actually own this virtual world in its entirety. Ready Player One brings a lot to the table, and has at least one easter egg of reference for everyone to find, whether it be a video game, movie, song etc. The film has a 7.4/10 on IMDb, a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 64% on Metacritic.

Ready Player One is currently streaming on Hulu.
