5 Reasons You Need To Watch Showtime’s Yellowjackets

If you’re looking for a thrilling new show to get lost in, Yellowjackets should be at the top of your watchlist! Season 1 of Showtime’s hit drama Yellowjackets just hit Netflix and we have five reasons why you need to dive into this riveting series!

1: The Plot

Looking for a show that will keep you guessing and leave you wanting more? Yellowjackets is a thrilling survival drama that follows a group of teenage girls whose plane crash-lands in the Canadian wilderness on their way to a soccer tournament. The show alternates between the present-day adult survivors, who are grappling with the trauma of their past, and the younger girls struggling to survive in a strange wilderness. This dual timeline structure adds a layer of suspense to the story, as you, the viewer, tries to piece together the events that led to the survivors’ rescue and realizes the secrets they have been hiding. With its blend of teen angst, supernatural elements, and a captivating premise, Yellowjackets is a must-watch for fans of mystery and drama.

2: The Cast

Yellowjackets boasts a stellar cast that bring the characters to life and take the show to a whole new level! Each character is complex and relatable, making it impossible not to be drawn into their stories. The talented ensemble in both the adult and teen timelines deliver powerful performances that will leave you captivated! Melanie Lynskey (Shauna), Juliette Lewis (Natalie), Christina Ricci (Misty), and Tawny Cypress (Taissa) lead the adult cast, with incredible performances that have earned Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci Emmy nominations for their roles!

The teen cast of Yellowjackets also boasts some of the most buzzworthy young actors in Hollywood right now! Ella Purnell stars as Jackie, who you might recognize from her role as Lucy in Fallout, and she’s joined by a talented cast. Sophie Thatcher, from MaXXXine, plays young Natalie alongside Sophie Nélisse (young Shauna) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (young Taissa). Shameless’s Samantha Hanratty also plays the diabolical young Misty. With established and up-and-coming stars, Yellowjackets is a must-watch for fans of exceptional acting!

3: The Music

Yellowjackets has a killer soundtrack! With the teen timeline set in the 90’s, you can expect some great hits and deep cuts from the decade on their soundtrack! From Tori Amos’s “Cornflake Girl, to early Smashing Pumpkins, this show covers a wide range of music from the decade. The show also features a cover from Florence + The Machine of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl, which is hauntingly beautiful.

And, of course, we have to talk about the original theme song! The grungy rager theme song “No Return” was written by 90’s music legends Anna Waronker, of That Dog, and Craig Wedren from Shudder to Think. It is a total earworm that captures the feel of the show perfectly! Alanis Morissette, the queen of 90s alt-rock, covered “No Return” which is used in Season 2 of Yellowjackets, and we love her take on it!  Get ready to relive some of the best 90’s music while you binge-watch Yellowjackets!

4: The 90’s Throwback

Stranger Things gives us all the 80’s nostalgia we need, but for those craving a bit of 90’s nostalgia, Yellowjackets is your show! The teen timeline starts during the end of most of the girls’ senior year of high school in 1996, before the soccer team is stranded for 19 months in the wilderness. From the fashion and hairstyles to the soundtrack we mentioned that is full of classic 90’s hits, Yellowjackets will have you feeling all of the vibes of the decade!

5: It’s Been Renewed!

Yellowjackets is going to be returning for Season 3! Showtime confirmed in May 2024 that Yellowjackets was filming for Season 3 so fans won’t have to wait much longer! Yellowjackets Executive Producers Ashley Lyle, Jonathan Lisco, and Bart Nickerson teased Season 3 would be coming in 2025 at the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards earlier this year in January. Showtime has also announced some exciting additions to the cast for Season 3! Comedian-actor Joel McHale, who you may recognize from Community or The Bear, and Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank will join the cast for the new season in roles that are still a secret. Just another mystery for fans to speculate about! You can watch Season 1 on Netflix right now and both seasons on Paramount+ with Showtime while we wait!
