To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a staple in fake dating romantic comedies. An adaptation of Jenny Han’s popular book series, the movie follows Lara Jean Covy (Lana Candor) who has a passion for writing letters to every boy she’s had a crush on. She never sends them, but when the letters get out she finds herself in an unlikely situation as she and one of the guys, Peter Kavinski (Noah Centineo) begin to fake date. They do this so she does not have to confront her sister’s boyfriend Josh (Israel Broussard) who also got a letter, and Peter can make Gen, his ex-girlfriend and Lara Jean’s rival, jealous. This movie, released in 2019, touched the hearts of many as Lara Jean accurately represents an awkward 16-year-old who is growing into her own person. Watching as she navigates romantic love for the first time with the support of her friends and sisters, truly pulls on the heartstrings.
Candy Jar

Continuing with the back-to-school trend, Candy Jar is an academic rivals-to-lovers story that follows co-captains of the debate team. Lonna Skinner (Sami Gayle) and Bennett Russell (Jacob Latimore) come from very different backgrounds but are vying for the same goal: acceptance to the Ivy League school of their dreams. After not qualifying for the state championship due to their mothers Amy (Christina Hendricks) and Julia (Uzo Aduba), who have an equally tempestuous rivalry, making a scene, the two of them decide to attempt to make it to the state finals as a team. While studying together they begin a friendship outside of debate competitions, and maybe even more. The two of them grow together, and it is through their relationship that they learn to let go and have fun and it’s heartwarming to watch as their relationship blossoms.
The Half of It

A modern-day twist on Cyrano de Bergerac, The Half of It follows Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) as she agrees to help football player Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer) woo the girl of his dreams, Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire) by writing love letters for him. The catch is that Ellie is also in love with Aster, unbeknownst to Paul. The Pacific Northwest town and grayish haze emphasize the autumn atmosphere in the film, but once again romantic love is not what truly provides the coziness. Paul and Ellie’s friendship is the underlying backbone of the film, and though it has its ups and downs viewers watch as they get to know each other and form an unbreakable bond.
Someone Great
We can’t talk about Someone Great without acknowledging what an *amazing* leading man LaKeith Stanfield is. Here’s a thread on how versatile this man’s acting is, and why we should be talking about him *much* more: pic.twitter.com/uyfVNWr6Z0

Keeping with the theme of friendship, Someone Great perfectly captures the transitional theme of fall. Geared more towards a college-aged and older demographic, Someone Great follows Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) , a music journalist set to move to San Francisco for her dream job at Rolling Stone, who is reeling from a breakup with her boyfriend of 9 years Nate (LaKeith Stanfield). Her solution to her post-breakup depression is one last hoorah with her college best friends Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow). The three girls attempt to secure tickets to a pop-up concert Neon Classic that they used to frequent throughout their time in college, and we witness the tomfoolery they get up to. Intertwined with flashbacks of Jenny and Nate’s relationship as well as Blair and Erin’s personal romantic endeavors this movie is chock full of hilarious and heartwarming moments between friends.
