5 Foreign Films on Hulu You Need to See

Subtitles won’t get in the way of these five foreign films that are all available to watch on Hulu right now!

Has a movie having subtitles ever stopped you from watching it? If it has, these are the 5 movies for you. These foreign films on Hulu will change the way you look at watching non English films. While they have a whole host of foreign films on their platform that are absolute must-sees, these 5 foreign films on Hulu will make you forget you are reading subtitles.

Anatomy of a Fall

Anatomy of a Fall follows a woman whose husband has died falling out of a window. She is left as the main suspect for his murder which leads to their lives being picked apart while she must defend herself and the anatomy of their relationship. This is a great movie to get into foreign films with because it is partly in English and partly in French. Anatomy of a Fall won best film at the Cannes film festival and has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sandra Hüller was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in this movie, and gives a performance you definitely do not want to miss.

Past lives

Past lives is about a 24 year relationship between two people that bends and transforms over time, but does not grow any less strong. The two were first childhood sweethearts and then reconnected in a close and romantically tense long-distance relationship, losing touch for years, only for one of them to come visit the other in New York. Past Lives is a testament to true love, what that means, and the understanding that this life we are living, could be one of many. It is a partly English and partly Korean spoken film, so again, a great way to break into films with subtitles.

Monos

Monos follows an American engineer who finds herself in a South American jungle. There are no adults, no rules, no laws, only the land and what ends up being a terrifying turn of events. Monos is a movie that keeps you entirely engaged throughout, and leaves you thinking about it long after you’ve finished watching. It is a Spanish language film with 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and will not disappoint.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is nothing if not a classic. In the film a warrior gives his beloved sword to his lover, Michelle Yeoh to safely deliver it. The sword is stolen and the chase to find it unlocks power like you’ve never seen before. If you aren’t used to reading subtitles, the sheer amount of action and stakes in this film will make those troubles dissipate. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, production design, and music. Safe to say this is an all-around award winning film. Don’t let an adversity to subtitles make you miss out on this classic masterpiece of a movie.

Parasite

Parasite is a movie about the intense and almost violent, or in this film’s case, overtly violent, class divide in South Korea. Parasite follows a family that slowly ingrains itself in a wealthy family’s home and life, until they realize that this has happened before, and to a much higher degree than any of them thought possible. Parasite is a fully Korean language film and won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020, and has an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
