The SAG Awards this year are happening a bit later than usual due to the pandemic and the show will also have no host. The nominees are all so amazing the race is sure to be a tight one!
Here are our predictions and thoughts on the upcoming awards.
Television
Best Ensemble in a Drama Series
Better Call Saul
Bridgerton
The Crown
Lovecraft Country
Ozark
Most likely will win: The Crown
Should win: Better Call Saul
The award is favorited to go to The Crown. The show won big at the Golden Globes this year, taking the award in 4 categories, it would make sense for it to win at the SAGs too. The cast was exceptional, especially newcomer Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of prime minister Margaret Thatcher. However, while the cast was remarkable, Better Call Saul really deserves the award this season. Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn’s character development was exceptional and they really pushed themselves in their performances this past season. The show has been nominated for years but has never won in any of the big award shows. It would be nice to see it get the recognition it deserves.
Best Actress in a Drama Series
Gillian Anderson – The Crown
Olivia Colman – The Crown
Emma Corrin – The Crown
Julia Garner – Ozark
Laura Linney – Ozark
Most likely will win: Gillian Anderson
Should win: Gillian Anderson
Gillian Anderson is the favorite to win this category and she definitely deserves it! She did a tremendous job playing England’s prime minister Margaret Thatcher. She made you feel both pity as well as frustration/hatred for the character. While this category could go to any of these amazing actresses, and we wouldn’t be mad at any of them taking home the award, Gillian Anderson is our bet.
Best Actor in a Drama Series
Jason Bateman – Ozark
Sterling K. Brown – This Is Us
Josh O’Connor – The Crown
Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul
Regé-Jean Page – Bridgerton
Most likely will win: Josh O’Connor
Should win: Bob Odenkirk
This category could go a number of ways. It could be given to Regé-Jean Page, who did an amazing job playing Simon in Bridgerton, but most likely it will be given to Josh O’Connor from The Crown. However, our vote is for Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul. For the same reasons stated in the Best Ensemble category, Odenkirk really gave a stellar performance this season and deserves to be acknowledged for it.
Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series
Dead to Me
The Flight Attendant
The Great
Schitt’s Creek
Ted Lasso
Most likely will win: Schitt’s Creek
Should win: Schitt’s Creek
The favorite to win is Schitt’s Creek and it definitely deserves it. This show has been looked over for so many seasons and is thankfully now getting the recognition it deserves. Sweeping at the Emmys and claiming best comedy series at the Golden Globes, we think this is a shoo-in to win. The other show that could also take the award, and would be deserving of it, is Ted Lasso. While we wouldn’t be mad at the Apple TV+ show winning, this is Schitt’s Creek’s last opportunity too.
Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate – Dead to Me
Linda Cardellini – Dead to Me
Kaley Cuoco – The Flight Attendant
Annie Murphy – Schitt’s Creek
Catherine O’Hara – Schitt’s Creek
Most likely will win: Catherine O’Hara
Should win: Catherine O’Hara
Catherine O’Hara will most likely take home the award and she should. For 6 seasons she has been playing the character Moira brilliantly and we would be elated to see her finally win the award for it. While Kaley Cuoco would also be a great win in this category for her performance in The Flight Attendant, much like the ensemble, this would be O’Hara’s last shot to win for Schitt’s Creek.
Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Nicholas Hoult – The Great
Dan Levy – Schitt’s Creek
Eugene Levy – Schitt’s Creek
Jason Sudeikis – Ted Lasso
Ramy Youssef – Ramy
Most likely will win: Jason Sudeikis
Should win: Jason Sudeikis
This category could go to either Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, or Jason Sudeikis. In our opinion, it should go to Sudeikis for his amazing portrayal of Ted Lasso. While Dan and Eugene would both be great choices to win, Sudeikis really brought home the performance of a happy-go-lucky guy who has to deal with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Cate Blanchett – Mrs. America
Michaela Coel – I May Destroy You
Nicole Kidman – The Undoing
Anya Taylor-Joy – The Queen’s Gambit
Kerry Washington – Little Fires Everywhere
Most likely will win: Anya Taylor-Joy
Should win: Michaela Coel
This award will most likely go to Anya Taylor-Joy from The Queen’s Gambit and while she did an amazing job in the role, it should go to Michaela Coel for her amazing performance in I May Destroy You. Coel’s portrayal of a girl dealing with rape, relationships, and self-identity blew us away and she deserves to be recognized for it.
Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Bill Camp – The Queen’s Gambit
Daveed Diggs – Hamilton
Hugh Grant – The Undoing
Ethan Hawke – The Good Lord Bird
Mark Ruffalo – I Know This Much Is True
Most likely will win: Mark Ruffalo
Should win: Mark Ruffalo or Ethan Hawke
This one is a toss-up in my opinion between Mark Ruffalo for I Know This Much is True and Ethan Hawke for The Good Lord Bird. Both gave amazing performances, in very different ways. While I believe this award will go to Ruffalo I would not be disappointed if Hawke go it either.
TV Stunt Cast Ensemble
The Boys
Cobra Kai
Lovecraft Country
The Mandalorian
Westworld
Most likely will win: The Mandalorian
Should win: The Boys or The Mandalorian
I feel like this could go to either The Mandalorian or The Boys. Both are action-packed with amazing fight sequences. However, it feels like this one will most likely go to The Mandalorian. There could be a twist though and the award could also be taken by Lovecraft Country who was also nominated for ensemble.
Film
Best Film Ensemble
Minari
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
One Night in Miami
Da 5 Bloods
Most likely will win: Minari
Should win: Minari
Minari’s cast is slated to win and they deserve it. This film was such an emotionally moving portrayal of the immigrant experience. Each member of this cast did an exceptional job including the children. It was such a raw and realistic interpretation of family life, struggle, and love. The other film that could take the award would be The Trial of the Chicago 7, but most likely Minari will win.
Best Film Actresses
Carey Mulligan – Promising Young Woman
Frances McDormand – Nomadland
Viola Davis – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Vanessa Kirby – Pieces of a Woman
Amy Adams – Hillbilly Elegy
Most likely will win: Carey Mulligan
Should win: Vanessa Kirby
Carey Mulligan is the favorite to win this category, and her portrayal of a woman looking for vengeance was amazing. However, Vanessa Kirby should win the award. Kirby’s performance of loss, healing, anger and sorrow was both beautiful and devastating to watch. She poured her whole heart and soul into this performance and should be recognized for it.
Best Film Actor
Chadwick Boseman – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Anthony Hopkins – The Father
Riz Ahmed – Sound of Metal
Steven Yeun – Minari
Gary Oldman – Mank
Most likely will win: Chadwick Boseman
Should win: Chadwick Boseman
It will come as no surprise if Chadwick Boseman takes this award. His performance left audiences speechless. While Anthony Hopkins gave a great performance as well and could take the award, Boseman is most likely going to win this one.
Best Film Supporting Actress
Youn Yuh-Jung – Minari
Maria Bakalova – Borat Subsequent Movie Film
Glenn Close – Hillbilly Elegy
Olivia Colman – The Father
Helena Zengel – News of the World
Most likely will win: Youn Yuh-Jung
Should win: Youn Yuh-Jung
Youn Yuh-Jung is the favorite to win in this category. Her performance as an immigrant grandmother in Minari was moving, hilarious, and authentic. While Maria Bakalova’s performance in Borat needs to be commended as well, Yuh-Jung deserves the award.
Best Film Supporting Actor
Daniel Kaluuya – Judas and the Black Messiah
Sacha Baron Cohen – The Trial of the Chicago 7
Leslie Odom, Jr. – One Night in Miami
Chadwick Boseman – Da 5 Bloods
Jared Leto – The Little Things
Most likely will win: Daniel Kaluuya
Should win: Daniel Kaluuya
Daniel Kaluuya is the favorite to win and he is our pick too. His performance in Judas and the Black Messiah was emotional and raw, leaving audiences in silence by the end of the film. This award should go to Kaluuya and most likely will.
Best Film Stunt Ensemble
Da 5 Bloods
Wonder Woman 1984
Mulan
News of the World
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Most likely to win: Da 5 Bloods
Should win: Da 5 Bloods
The favorite for this category is Da 5 Bloods. The action sequences in this film were stunning and surprising but it’s hard to ignore more action-based films like Mulan and Wonder Woman 1984. However, Da 5 Bloods should take home the award.
The SAG Awards will air on Sunday, April 4th at 9 pm ET and 6 pm PT on TBS and TNT.
