10 One Direction Songs Fans Are Using to Grieve Liam Payne

Fans are devastated after the passing of pop star and One Direction member Liam Payne. The public has taken to listening to songs from the band and Liam himself as they grieve this loss. But while their hits may be the ones reentering the charts, many Directioners are listening to their lesser talked about songs.

Walking In The Wind

Walking In The Wind” is a soft song that discusses losing a friend or a partner, but finding the memory of them in places that you wouldn’t expect. Originally, many fans associated the song with Zayn Malik, as it was released on their Made In The AM album after he departed from the group. However, recently fans have found comfort in the song’s message about meeting someone again in the future, and that maybe they could find Liam Payne walking in the wind.

Moments

Released on their first album, “Moments is a song that is explicitly about grieving someone you care about. “If we could only have this life for one more day / If we could only turn back time.” A lot of fans have taken this song as an expression of wanting the person you have lost back. It hits especially hard when you realize the first verse is sung by Liam Payne himself.

Spaces

Many One Direction songs tend to be declarations of love, but “Spaces” details the anxieties found in a relationship where the two people are drifting apart. This song cuts deep as the members of One Direction weren’t all on the best terms at the time of Liam Payne’s passing, but no one thought he’d be the first to say goodbye.

Right Now

Right Now” is one of the many One Direction songs Liam Payne had a hand in writing with the help of fellow members Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles. The song explores the idea of missing someone and reminiscing on the memories shared with them. “Right now I wish you were here with me.”

Where Do Broken Hearts Go

Prior to its release, a clip of Harry Styles singing the song in the band’s This Is Us film went viral amongst fans, however, this heartbreak anthem has reentered the charts with a new meaning behind it. Directioners are heartbroken at the loss of Liam Payne, and it seems many want to remember him through reminiscing on iconic One Direction songs.

I Want To Write You A Song

I wanna write you a song / One to make your heart remember me / So any time I’m gone / You can listen to my voice and sing along.” In the Made In The AM track by track breakdown, Liam Payne said this was one of his favorite songs off their album because it was the type of song he wanted to write for someone. Many fans have found comfort in the idea that now that he is gone, they can listen to his music and One Direction’s music and hear his voice and sing along.

Story of My Life

The first verse of “Story of My Life” ends with Liam Payne singing, “It seems to me that when I die, these words will be written on my stone.” No one expected these words to resonate so early in their lives, however many fans have not only been listening to the song, but also the music video which shows photos from throughout the boys’ lives and recreations of the photo. Fans have come to the heartbreaking conclusion that like many of the other people who have passed, he is now one of the people who won’t be in the recreations.

Night Changes

The tragic loss of Liam Payne was unexpected. Like a change from day to night. “Night Changes” is the second single from their fourth album Four and a song that even non-fans have been listening to. “We’re only gettin’ older, baby / And I’ve been thinkin’ about it lately / Does it ever drive you crazy.”

Half A Heart

A bonus track on the deluxe edition of Midnight Memories, “Half a Heart is a song about missing someone after a breakup. However, the lyrics can relate to any situation about missing someone you love, and for many that someone is unexpectedly Liam Payne. “I’m half a heart without you.”

History

Finally, out of all the One Direction songs, it seems “History” is the most listened to. The final goodbye before the band went on their hiatus, a lot of fans can relate this song to their experience with the band. There’s a lot of history tied to this band for many, and for a while the belief that the band would come back was strong. However, this loss has caused many to realize that the band will never be the same.
